إِذاwhen رَشَقَتstruck قَلبيmy heart سِهامٌarrows مِنَfrom الصَدِّrejection
وَبَدَّلَand replaced قُربيmy nearness حادِثُa turn of الدَهرِfate بِالبُعدِwith distance
When arrows of rejection strike my heart,
And a turn of fate replaces my nearness with distance,
لَبَستُI donned لَهاagainst them دِرعاًarmor مِنَof الصَبرِpatience مانِعاًprotective
وَلاقَيتُand I faced جَيشَthe army of الشَوقِlonging مُنفَرِداًsolitary وَحديalone
Against them I don protective armor of patience,
And face the army of longing, solitary and alone.
وَبِتُّand I spent the night بِطَيفٍwith a phantom مِنكِfrom you ياO عَبلَʿAbl قانِعاًcontent
وَلَوand even if باتَspent the night يَسريmoves by night فيin الظَلامِthe darkness عَلىover خَدّيmy cheek
And I spend the night content with a phantom of you, O ʿAbl,
Even if it glides all night through the darkness over my cheek.
فَبِاللَهِso, by God ياO ريحَwind of الحِجازِthe Hijaz تَنَفَّسيbreathe
عَلىupon كَبِدٍa liver حَرّىburning تَذوبُmelts مِنَfrom الوَجدِlove's anguish
So, by God, O wind of the Hijaz, breathe
Upon a burning liver that melts with love's anguish.
وَياand O بَرقُlightning إِنif عَرَّضتَyou flashed مِنfrom جانِبِthe direction of الحِمىthe protected grounds
فَحَيِّthen greet بَنيthe sons of عَبسٍʿAbs عَلىupon العَلَمِthe hill السَعديSaʿdi
And O lightning, if you flash from the direction of the protected grounds,
Then greet the sons of ʿAbs upon the Saʿdi hill.
وَإِنand if خَمَدَتdied out نيرانُthe fires of عَبلَةَʿAbla مَوهِناًlate at night
فَكُنthen be أَنتَyou yourself فيin أَكنافِهاher surroundings نَيِّرَbright الوَقدِthe blaze
And if ʿAbla's fires die out late at night,
Then you yourself must blaze brightly all around her.
وَخَلِّand let النَدىthe dew يَنهَلُّpour down فَوقَover خِيامِهاher tents
يُذَكِّرُهاreminds her أَنّيthat I مُقيمٌremaining faithful عَلىto العَهدِthe pledge
And let the dew pour down over her tents,
Reminding her that I remain true to the pledge.
عَدِمتُmay I be denied اللِقاreunion إِنif كُنتُI was بَعدَafter فِراقِهاparting from her
رَقَدتُI slept وَماand did not مَثَّلتُI pictured صورَتَهاher image عِنديbefore me
May I be denied reunion if, after parting from her,
I have slept without picturing her image before me.
وَماand nothing شاقَstirred longing in قَلبيmy heart فيin الدُجىthe darkness غَيرُexcept طائِرٍa bird
يَنوحُlaments عَلىon غُصنٍa branch رَطيبٍtender مِنَof الرَندِlaurel
And nothing stirred my heart's longing in the darkness but a bird
Lamenting on a tender branch of laurel.
بِهِin it مِثلُthe like of ماwhat بيin me فَهوَso it يُخفيconceals مِنَof الجَوىheartache
كَمِثلِjust like الَّذيwhat أُخفيI conceal وَيُبديand reveals الَّذيwhat أُبديI reveal
It suffers as I do, so it conceals its heartache
Just as I conceal mine, and reveals what I reveal.
أَلاah! قاتَلَmay ... curse اللَهُGod الهَوىlove كَمhow many بِسَيفِهِby its sword
قَتيلُone slain by غَرامٍpassion لاnot يُوَسَّدُis laid to rest فيin اللَحدِthe grave
Ah, may God curse love! How many, by its sword,
Are slain by passion, yet not laid to rest in the grave!
