ضَحِكَتshe laughed عُبَيلَةُUbaylah إِذwhen رَأَتنيshe saw me عارِياًbare
خَلَقَthreadbare القَميصِthe shirt وَساعِديand my forearm مَخدوشُscratched
Ubaylah laughed when she saw me bare,
Ubaila laughed when she saw me naked,
my shirt threadbare and my forearm scratched.
My shirt and sleeves were torn.
لاdo not تَضحَكيyou laugh مِنّيat me عُبَيلَةُUbaylah وَاِعجَبيand marvel
مِنّيat me إِذاwhen اِلتَفَّتclosed in عَلَيَّaround me جُيوشُarmies
Do not laugh at me, Ubaylah, but marvel
Do not laugh at me, O Ubaila, admire me
at me when armies close around me,
When armies turn against me.
وَرَأَيتِand you saw رُمحيmy spear فيin القُلوبِthe hearts مُحَكَّماًgiven authority
وَعَلَيهِand upon it مِنfrom فَيضِflood الدِماءِthe blood نُقوشُpatterns
and you see my spear holding sway within hearts,
And you see my spear firmly lodged in hearts
and upon it are patterns from the flood of blood.
With traces of blood glistening on its tip.
أَلقىI meet صُدورَchests الخَيلِthe horses وَهيَwhile they are عَوابِسٌscowling
وَأَناand I ضَحوكٌfull of laughter نَحوَهاtoward them وَبَشوشُand beaming
I face the horses' chests while they scowl,
I charge the scowling horses
while I am all laughter and smiles toward them.
While I, cheerful, advance towards them smiling.
إِنّيindeed, I أَناI لَيثُlion العَرينِthe lair وَمَنand whoever لَهُto him
قَلبُheart الجَبانِthe coward مُحَيَّرٌbewildered مَدهوشُstunned
Indeed, I am the lion of the lair, and whoever has
I am the lion of the den, and he who has
a coward's heart is bewildered and stunned.
The heart of a coward is confused and anxious.
إِنّيindeed, I لَأَعجَبُI truly marvel كَيفَhow يَنظُرُhe looks at صورَتيmy form
يَومَon the day القِتالِthe battle مُبارِزٌa duelist وَيَعيشُand he lives
Indeed, I marvel how my form can be beheld
I wonder how my opponent can look at my image
on the day of battle by a duelist who survives.
On the day of battle, yet he lives on.
