عِقابُpunishment الهَجرِof separation أَعقَبَbrought about ليfor me الوِصالاًreunion
وَصِدقُand sincerity الصَبرِof patience أَظهَرَrevealed ليto me المُحالاthe impossible
The punishment of separation brought me reunion,
The pangs of separation have brought me union
and true patience revealed the impossible to me.
And the truth of patience has shown me the impossible
وَلَولاand were it not for حُبُّlove عَبلَةَof Abla فيin فُؤاديmy heart
مُقيمٌabiding ماnot رَعَيتُI tended لَهُمfor them جِمالاcamels
And had the love of Abla in my heart not
Were it not for the love of Abla in my heart
abided, I would not have tended camels for them.
I would not have tended to their beauty
عَتَبتُI reproached الدَهرَTime كَيفَhow يُذِلَّit abases مِثليone like me
وَليand I have عَزمٌresolve أَقُدُّI cleave بِهِwith it الجِبالاthe mountains
I reproached Time: how could it abase one like me,
I blamed fate, how could it humiliate one like me
when I have resolve with which I cleave mountains?
When I have a resolve with which I can move mountains
أَناI الرَجُلُthe man الَّذيwho خُبِّرتَyou were told عَنهُabout him
وَقَدand indeed عايَنتَyou witnessed مِنfrom خَبريmy story الفِعالاthe deeds
I am the man you were told about,
I am the man you have heard about
and you have witnessed the deeds my story tells.
And you have already seen my deeds
غَداةَon the morning أَتَتcame بَنوthe sons طَيٍّof Tayy وَكَلبٍand Kalb
تَهُزُّbrandishing بِكَفِّهاwith its hand السُمرَthe brown spears الطِوالاthe long ones
On the morning the sons of Tayy and Kalb came,
The morning the tribes of Tayy and Kalb came
brandishing the long brown spears in their hands,
Brandishing spears with their hands
بِجَيشٍwith an army كُلَّماwhenever لاحَظتُI gazed فيهِinto it
حَسِبتُI thought الأَرضَthe earth قَدalready مُلِأَتhad been filled رِجالاwith men
with an army that, whenever I gazed into it,
With an army, whenever I looked in it
I thought the earth had been filled with men.
I thought the land was filled with men
وَداسواand they trampled أَرضَناour land بِمُضَمَّراتٍwith lean steeds
فَكانَso it was صَهيلُهاtheir neighing قيلاًtalk وَقالاand chatter
And they trampled our land with lean steeds,
They trampled our land with treachery
so their neighing was talk and chatter.
So that the neighing of their horses was gossip and words
تَوَلَّواthey turned away جُفَّلاًin panicked flight مِنّاfrom us حَيارىbewildered
وَفاتواand they left behind الظُعنَthe women in litters مِنهُمof theirs وَالرِحالاand the baggage
They turned away from us in panicked flight, bewildered,
They turned away from us confused
and left behind their women in litters and their baggage.
Missing thrusts and stirrups from them
وَماand not حَمَلَتbore ذَوُوthose of الأَنسابِlineages ضَيماًhumiliation
وَلاnor سَمِعَتlistened لِداعيهاto their summoner مَقالاspeech
And those of noble lineage bore no humiliation,
The highborn did not bear injustice
nor heeded their summoner's words.
Nor did their supplications hear any words
وَماand not رَدُّturning back الأَعِنَّةِthe reins غَيرُother than عَبدٍa slave
وَنارُand the fire الحَربِof war تَشتَعِلُblazes اِشتِعالاfiercely
And none but a slave turned back the reins,
Only the protection of the helpless is Abdel
while the fire of war blazed fiercely,
And the fire of war rages furiously
بِطَعنٍwith spear-thrusts تُرعَدُare made to tremble الأَبطالُthe champions مِنهُfrom it
لِشِدَّتِهِbecause of its force فَتَجتَنِبُso they avoid القِتالاcombat
with spear-thrusts that made champions tremble
With a thrust that makes stalwarts tremble
at their force, so they shunned combat.
So they avoid fighting
صَدَمتُI charged الجَيشَthe army حَتّىuntil كُلَّgrew weary مُهريmy colt
وَعُدتُand I returned فَماthen not وَجَدتُI found لَهُمof theirs ظِلالاshadows
I charged the army until my colt grew weary,
I charged the army until every skilled one
and returned, but found not a shadow of them.
And returned to find no shade for them
وَراحَتand fled خَيلُهُمtheir horses مِنfrom وَجهِthe face سَيفيof my sword
خِفافاًlight بَعدَماafter كانَتthey had been ثِقالاheavy
And their horses fled from the face of my sword,
Their horses fled before my sword
light after they had been heavy,
Lightly after they had been heavy
تَدوسُthey trample عَلىupon الفَوارِسِthe horsemen وَهيَwhile they تَعدوgallop
وَقَدand already أَخَذَتthey had taken جَماجِمَهُمtheir skulls نِعالاas sandals
trampling the horsemen as they galloped,
Trampling on the horsemen as they galloped
having taken their skulls as sandals.
Taking their skulls as shoes
وَكَمand how many بَطَلٍa champion تَرَكتُI left بِهاin it طَريحاًlying fallen
يُحَرِّكُhe moves بَعدَafter يُمناهُhis right hand الشِمالاthe left hand
And many a champion I left there fallen,
And how many champions I felled
moving his left hand after his right.
Who stir their left side after their right
وَخَلَّصتُand I rescued العَذارىthe maidens وَالغَوانيand the beauties
وَماand not أَبقَيتُI left مَعwith أَحَدٍanyone عِقالاa camel-hobble
And I rescued the maidens and the beauties,
I saved the virgins and the singing girls
and left no one even a camel's hobble.
And did not leave anyone shackled
