    The apparition—Abla's apparition—came in sleep

To a lovelorn man, intoxicated, his bonds undone.

So I rose, lamenting what I had suffered from her absence,

Then she breathed musk mingling with ambergris.

So I embraced her, to kiss her lips,

While tears from my eyelids had soaked the earth.

And I lifted her veil, and her face shone,

Until it turned the night into a radiant morning.

An Arab woman whose supple figure sways,

So lovers take it for a tawny spear.

Secluded behind keen swords and slender lances,

Tawny—and before her tent stand the lions of al-Shara.

O Abla, love for you has indeed surpassed all bounds,

And I alone, among all people, am tormented with love for you.

    لمَّا جرت روحي بجسمي قدْ جرَى

    O Abla, love for you is in my bones, with my blood;

When my soul coursed through my body, love coursed too.

And I have indeed clung to the hem of him in whom

Abs took pride, and whose father's sword destroyed Himyar.

O Sha's, deliver me from a deadly passion,

Through it I grow ever more ablaze with passion.

O Sash, were love's sovereign power not

Unwavering in resolve, it would not have mastered Antar.
