ريحَO wind الحِجازِof the Hijaz بِحَقِّby the right of مَنthe One who أَنشاكِcreated you
رُدّيreturn السَلامَthe greeting وَحَيِّand greet مَنwhoever حَيّاكِgreeted you
O wind of the Hijaz, by Him who created you,
O breeze of Hejaz, by the right of the One who created you
return the greeting, and greet whoever greeted you.
Return my greetings and give life to the one who greeted you
هُبّيblow عَسىperhaps وَجديmy yearning يَخِفُّeases وَتَنطَفيand is extinguished
نيرانُthe fires of أَشواقيmy longings بِبَردِby the coolness of هَواكِyour breeze
Blow; perhaps my yearning will ease, and quenched will be
Blow gently, perhaps you will find my longing abating
the fires of my longing by the coolness of your breeze.
And the fires of my passion cooling in your breeze
ياO ريحُwind لَولاwere it not for أَنَّthe fact that فيكِwithin you بَقِيَّةًa lingering trace
مِنof طيبِthe fragrance of عَبلَةَAbla مُتُّI would have died قَبلَbefore لِقاكِmeeting you
O wind, were it not for a lingering trace within you
O breeze, were it not for the remnant of perfume
of Abla's fragrance, I would have died before meeting you.
From the mounts of Abila that clings to you still
كَيفَhow السُلُوُّsolace وَماand never سَمِعتُI heard حَمائِماًdoves
يَندُبنَlamenting إِلّاexcept that كُنتُI was أَوَّلَthe first باكيto weep
How can I find solace, when never have I heard doves
How could I bear this, when I have not heard doves mourning
lamenting without being the first to weep?
Except that I was the first to weep with them
بَعُدَgrew distant المَزارُthe meeting-place فَعادَso withdrew طَيفُthe phantom of خَيالَهاher image
عَنّيfrom me قِفارَbarren tracts of مَهامِهِvast wildernesses of الأَعناكِthe dunes
The meeting-place grew distant, and her phantom image withdrew
After visiting her grave, the image of her departed
from me into the desolate wilderness of the dunes.
Has vanished from me, leaving but barren ruins behind
ياO عَبلَAbla ماnot أَخشىI fear الحِمامِdeath وَإِنَّماbut only
أَخشىI fear عَلىfor عَينَيكِyour two eyes وَقتَat the time of بُكاكِyour weeping
O Abla, I do not fear death; I only
O Abila, I do not fear the doves, but rather
fear for your eyes when you weep.
I fear for your eyes at the time of weeping
ياO عَبلَAbla لاlet not يَحزُنكِgrieve you بُعديmy absence وَاِبشِريand rejoice
بِسَلامَتيin my safety وَاِستَبشِريand be glad بِفَكاكيat my release
O Abla, let my absence not grieve you, and rejoice
O Abila, do not grieve for my absence, and rejoice
in my safety, and be glad at my release.
In my safety, take comfort in my deliverance
هَلّاwhy not سَأَلتِyou asked الخَيلَthe horses ياO اِبنَةَdaughter of مالِكٍMalik
إِنif كانَwas بَعضُsome of عِداكِyour enemies قَدalready أَغراكِincited you
Why not ask the horses, O daughter of Malik,
Why did you not ask the horses, o daughter of Malik
if some of your enemies have incited you?
If some of your enemies have fooled you
يُخبِركِwill tell you مَنwhoever حَضَرَwas present in الشَآمَal-Sham بِأَنَّنيthat I
أَصفَيتُI sincerely bestowed وُدّاًaffection مَنthose who أَرادَsought هَلاكيmy destruction
Whoever was present in al-Sham will tell you that I
They would tell you, I who was in Damascus
gave sincere affection to those who sought my destruction.
Have sifted affection from those who sought my demise
ذَلَّwere humbled الأُلىthose who اِحتالواschemed عَلَيَّagainst me وَأَصبَحواand came to
يَتَشَفَّعونَseek intercession بِسَيفِيَthrough my sword الفَتّاكِdeadly
Those who schemed against me were humbled, and came to
The misguided ones conspired against me and by morning
seek intercession through my deadly sword.
They pleaded for mercy from my deadly sword
فَعَفَوتُso I spared عَنfrom أَموالِهِمtheir possessions وَحَريمِهِمand their womenfolk
وَحَمَيتُand I protected رَبعَthe encampment of القَومِthe people مِثلِlike حِماكِyour sanctuary
So I spared their possessions and their womenfolk,
So I pardoned their wealth and their women
and guarded the people's encampment as I would your sanctuary.
And protected a quarter of the people, like protective cover
وَلَقَدand indeed حَمَلتُI charged عَلىagainst الأَعاجِمِthe non-Arabs حِملَةًa charge
ضَجَّتcried out لَهاbecause of it الأَملاكُthe angels فيin الأَفلاكِthe heavenly spheres
And indeed I launched a charge against the non-Arabs
And I charged against the non-Arabs with a raid
at which the angels cried out in the heavenly spheres.
That shook the celestial angels in the cosmic spheres
فَنَثَرتُهُمso I scattered them لَمّاwhen أَتَونيthey came at me فيin الفَلاthe open desert
بِسِنانِwith the point of رُمحٍa spear لِلدِماof blood سَفّاكِa copious shedder
Then I scattered them when they came at me in the desert,
Scattering them when they came upon me in the open desert
with the point of a blood-shedding spear.
With the piercing point of a blood-letting spear
