ياO صاحِبيmy companion لاdo not تَبكِweep رَبعاًan encampment قَدalready خَلاhas become deserted
وَدَعِand leave المَنازِلَthe dwellings تَشتَكيto lament طولَthe long duration of البِلىdecay
O my companion, do not weep for an encampment now deserted;
and leave the dwellings to lament their long decay.
وَاِشكوand complain إِلىto حَدِّthe edge of الحُسامِthe keen sword فَإِنَّهُfor it is
أَمضىkeener إِذاwhen حَقَّcomes to pass اللِقاءُthe clash وَأَفضَلاand better
And confide in the keen sword's edge, for it
is keener and better when battle is joined.
مِنfrom أَينَwhere تَدريknows الدارُthe dwelling أَنَّكَthat you are عاشِقٌa lover
أَوor عِندَهاwith it خَبَرٌnews بِأَنَّكَthat you are مُبتَلىafflicted
How could the dwelling know that you are in love,
or have any word that you are afflicted?
وَاللَهِby God ماnot يُمضيsends forth رَسولاًa messenger صادِقاًtruthful
إِلّاexcept السِنانُthe spearhead إِذاwhen الخَليلُthe close friend تَبَدَّلاhas changed
By God, nothing sends forth a truthful messenger
except the spearhead, when a close friend has changed.
وَلَقَدand indeed عَرَكتُI grappled with الدَهرَTime حَتّىso much so that إِنَّهُindeed it
لَوif لَمnot يَذُقtasted مِنّيfrom me المَرارَةَbitterness ماnot حَلاbecame sweet
And I have indeed wrestled with Time, so much so that
had it not tasted bitterness from me, it would not have grown sweet.
وَكَذاand likewise سِباعُbeasts of prey البَرِّthe land لَولاwere it not for شَرُّهاtheir ferocity
دارَتwould circle بِهاaround them فيin الغابِthe thickets غِربانُravens of الفَلاthe wastes
Likewise the land's beasts of prey: were it not for their ferocity,
the ravens of the wastes would circle them in the thickets.
فَتَحَمَّلاso bear, you two ياO صاحِبَيَّmy two companions رِسالَتيmy message
إِنif كُنتُماyou two are عَنaway from أَرضِthe land of عَبسٍʿAbs تَعدِلاyou two turn aside
So bear my message, O my two companions,
if you turn away from the land of ʿAbs.
قولاsay, you two لِقَيسٍto Qays وَالرَبيعِand al-Rabīʿ بِأَنَّنيthat I
خَطُّthe streak of المَشيبِgray hair عَلىover شَبابيmy youth ماnot عَلاhas risen
Tell Qays and al-Rabīʿ that
no streak of gray has overtaken my youth.
بَلrather لَوif صَدَمتُI struck بِهِمَّتيwith my resolve جَبَليthe two mountains of حَرىḤarā
قَسَماًI swear وَحَقِّand by the sanctity of أَبيAbū قُبَيسَQubays تَزَلزَلاboth would quake
Rather, if I struck the two mountains of Ḥarā with my resolve,
I swear by the sanctity of Abū Qubays: both would quake.
لَوif لَمnot تَكُنyou had been ياO قَيسُQays غَرَّكَdeceived you جاهِلٌa fool
ماnot سُقتَyou led نَحوَtoward دِيارِthe dwellings of عَنتَرَʿAntar جَحفَلاa great army
Had a fool not deceived you, O Qays,
you would not have led a great army toward ʿAntar's dwellings.
وَاللَهِby God لَوif شاهَدتَهُyou had beheld him وَرَأَيتَهُand you had seen him
ماnot كانَwas آخِرُهُits rear يُلاقيmeets الأَوَّلاthe vanguard
By God, had you beheld him and seen him,
its rear would not have met its vanguard.
ياO قَيسُQays أَنتَyou تَعُدُّcount نَفسَكَyourself سَيِّداًa chief
وَأَبوكَand your father أَعرِفُهُI know him أَجَلَّnobler وَأَفضَلاand better
O Qays, you count yourself a chief,
yet I know your father to be nobler and better.
فَاِتبَعso follow مَكارِمَهُhis noble qualities وَلاand do not تُذريbring disgrace بِهِupon him
إِنif كُنتَyou are مِمَّنamong those who عَقلُهُhis reason قَدalready أُكمِلاhas been perfected
So follow his noble ways, and do not dishonor him,
if you are one whose reason has reached its fullness.
فَاِحذَرso beware of فَزارَةَFazārah قَبلَbefore تَطلُبُit seeks ثَأرَهاits vengeance
وَتُريكَand shows you يَوماًa day نارُهُits fire لاnot تُصطَلىcan be approached for warmth
So beware of Fazārah before it seeks its vengeance
and shows you a day whose fire cannot be approached.
فَدِماfor the blood of بَنيthe sons of بَدرٍBadr عَلَيكَupon you قَديمَةٌlongstanding
وَبَنيand the sons of فَزارَةَFazārah قَصدُهاtheir aim أَنthat تَغفَلاyou grow heedless
For you have long owed a blood-debt to the sons of Badr,
and the sons of Fazārah want you off guard.
وَاللَهِby God ماnot خَلَّيتُI left فيin أَوطانِهِمtheir homelands
إِلّاexcept النَوائِحَthe mourning women صارِخاتٍscreaming فيin الفَلاthe wastes
By God, I left nothing in their homelands
but mourning women, screaming in the wastes.
