ياO طائِرَbird البانِthe moringa tree قَدindeed هَيَّجتَyou have stirred أَشجانيmy sorrows
وَزِدتَنيand you gave me more طَرَباًemotional unrest ياO طائِرَbird البانِthe moringa tree
O bird of the moringa tree, you have stirred my sorrows.
O bird of woe, you’ve stirred my sorrows
And heightened my unrest, O bird of the moringa tree.
And increased my turmoil, o bird of woe
إِنif كُنتَyou are تَندُبُlamenting إِلفاًa beloved companion قَدalready فُجِعتَyou were bereaved بِهِof him
فَقَدthen indeed شَجاكَhas grieved you الَّذيthat which بِالبَينِthrough parting أَشجانيgrieved me
If you lament a companion whose loss has stricken you,
If you mourn a friend now lost to you
Then what grieved me through parting has grieved you.
Then we share the grief of separation’s woe
زِدنيgive me more مِنَof النَوحِlamentation وَاِسعِدنيand aid me عَلىin حَزَنيmy grief
حَتّىuntil تَرىyou see عَجَباًa marvel مِنfrom فَيضِthe overflow of أَجفانيmy eyelids
Give me more lamentation, and join me in my grief,
Give me more laments and gladden me in my grief
Until you see a marvel in the flood from my eyelids.
So you may see wonders from my eyes’ overflow

And pause to see what ails me; do not be hasty.
Stop and look at me, do not hurry on
And beware, for your own sake, of the breaths of my fires.
And guard yourself from my fiery breaths’ hot glow

And fly; perhaps in the land of the Hijaz you will see
Perhaps in the land of Hejaz you may see
A caravan at ʿĀlij, or this side of Nuʿmān,
A band on a camel or by Nu’man below

Traveling by night with a young woman whose tears stream
Moving with a maiden whose falling tears
Out of longing for a far-off homeland and neighbors.
Yearn for a soft home and neighbors she did know

I adjure you by God, O dove: when
I bid you by God, o bird of doves, if one day
You see the people's litter-bearing camels one day, announce my death,
You see the tribe’s departure, give me your cries’ flow

And say: 'We left him prostrate; already spent were
Say you left me fallen, my tears now ended
His tears, while he wept crimson blood.'
As I wept tears of blood in bitterest woe
