صَحاsobered مِنfrom سُكرِهِits drunkenness قَلبيmy heart وَفاقاand came to its senses
وَزارَand visited النَومُsleep أَجفانيmy eyelids اِستِراقاstealthily
My heart sobered from its drunkenness and came to its senses.
My heart awoke from its drunkenness,
And sleep visited my eyelids stealthily.
And sleep visited my eyelids by stealth.
وَأَسعَدَنيand favored me الزَمانُtime فَصارَso it began سَعديmy good fortune
يَشُقُّpierces الحُجبَthe veils وَالسَبعَand the seven heavens الطِباقاlayered one above another
And time favored me, so my good fortune began
Time made me fortunate, so my happiness
To pierce the veils and the seven layered heavens.
Broke through veils and formidable barriers.
أَناI العَبدُthe slave الَّذيwho يَلقىfaces المَناياdeath
غَداةَon the morning of الرَوعِterror لاnot يَخشىfears المَحاقاannihilation
I am the slave who faces death
I am the slave who meets calamities
On the morning of terror, fearing no annihilation.
The morning after panic, fearing no end.
أَكُرُّI charge عَلىagainst الفَوارِسِthe horsemen يَومَon a day of حَربٍwar
وَلاand not أَخشىI fear المُهَنَّدَةَthe Indian-steel swords الرِقاقاthe slender ones
I charge the horsemen on a day of war,
I attack the horsemen on days of war,
Nor do I fear the slender Indian-steel swords.
And do not fear the lightly armed warriors.
وَتُطرِبُنيand enrapture me سُيوفُthe swords الهِندِof India حَتّىuntil
أَهيمَI yearn madly إِلىtoward مَضارِبِهاtheir striking edges اِشتِياقاwith longing
And the swords of India enrapture me until
I am thrilled by Indian swords until
I long madly for their striking edges.
I yearn for the arenas where they clash.
وَإِنّيand indeed I أَعشَقُlove السُمرَthe brown spears العَواليthe tall ones
وَغَيريand others besides me يَعشَقُlove البيضَfair-skinned women الرِشاقاthe slender ones
And indeed I love the tall, brown spears,
But I am one who loves the noble summit,
While others love fair, slender women.
While others love the soft and gentle sands.
وَكاساتُand cups الأَسِنَّةِof spearheads ليfor me شَرابٌa drink
أَلَذُّI delight بِهِin it اِصطِباحاًas a morning draught وَاِغتِباقاand an evening draught
And the cups of spearheads are my drink,
Goblets with spear-heads are my drink,
Which I relish drinking morning and evening.
With which I am happiest when I imbibe.
وَأَطرافُand the tips القَناof spears الخَطِّيِّfrom al-Khatt نَقليmy sweetmeats
وَرَيحانيand my fragrant herbs إِذاwhen المِضمارُthe racecourse ضاقاnarrows
And the tips of Khatti spears are my sweetmeats
The tips of slim spears are my transport,
And my fragrant herbs when the racecourse narrows.
As is the fragrance of basil when the track is congested.
جَزىmay reward اللَهُGod الجَوادَthe steed اليَومَtoday عَنّيon my behalf
بِماwith what يَجزيHe rewards بِهِwith it الخَيلَhorses العِتاقاthe noble ones
May God reward the steed today on my behalf,
May God reward the steed today for me,
With the reward He grants noble horses.
As free horses are rewarded by release.
شَقَقتُI cleaved بِصَدرِهِwith his breast مَوجَthe waves المَناياof death
وَخُضتُand I waded through النَقعَthe battle-dust لاnot أَخشىI fear اللَحاقاbeing overtaken
With his breast I cleaved the waves of death,
With his chest I split the wave of death,
And I waded through the battle-dust, unafraid of being overtaken.
And plunged in, heedless of being caught.
أَلاAh! ياO عَبلَAbla لَوif only أَبصَرتِyou had seen فِعليmy deeds
وَخَيلُand the horses المَوتِof death تَنطَبِقُclose in اِنطِباقاtightly
Ah, Abla, if only you had seen my deeds,
Oh Abla, if you could see my deeds,
While death's horses closed tightly in.
And death's horses closing in fast around me!
سَليask سَيفيmy sword وَرُمحيand my spear عَنabout قِتاليmy fighting
هُماthe two of them فيin الحَربِwar كاناwere both ليfor me رِفاقاcompanions
Ask my sword and my spear about my fighting:
Ask my sword and spear about my fighting;
In war, they were both my companions.
In war they were my companions.
I gave them both to drink دَماًblood لَوif كانَhad been يُسقىgiven to drink
بِهِwith it جَبَلاthe two mountains تِهامَةَof Tihama ماnot أَفاقاthey both recovered
I gave them both blood to drink; had it been given
I watered them with blood, which if poured
To Tihama's two mountains, they would not have recovered.
On Mount Tihama, would not revive.
وَكَمand how many مِنof سَيِّدٍa chieftain خَلَّيتُI left مُلقىًlying fallen

يُحَرِّكُmoves فيin الدِماthe blood قَدَماًa foot وَساقاand a leg
And many a chieftain I have left sprawled,
And many a lord have I felled and left
Moving a foot and a leg in the blood.
Twitching feet and legs in the blood.
