فَخرُpride الرِجالِof men سَلاسِلٌchains وَقُيودُand fetters
وَكَذاand likewise النِساءُwomen بَخانِقٌhead-veils وَعُقودُand necklaces
Men's pride is chains and fetters;
The pride of men are chains and shackles,
And likewise, women's is head-veils and necklaces.
As are women's necklaces and bracelets.
وَإِذاand when غُبارُdust الخَيلِof the horses مَدَّspread رُواقَهُits canopy
سُكريmy intoxication بِهِfrom it لاnot ماwhat جَنىyielded العُنقودُthe grape-cluster
And when the horses' dust spreads its canopy,
And when the dust of horses fills its expanse,
My intoxication comes from it, not from what the grape-cluster yields.
I become drunk with it, not with what the grapevines produced.
ياO دَهرُTime لاdo not تُبقِspare عَلَيَّupon me فَقَدfor already دَناhas drawn near
ماwhat كُنتُI used to أَطلُبُseek قَبلَbefore ذاthis وَأُريدُand desire
O Time, spare me not, for it has drawn near—
O time, do not leave me, for what I sought is near,
What I sought and desired before this.
What I wanted before this and intended.
فَالقَتلُfor being slain ليfor me مِنfrom بَعدِafter عَبلَةَAbla راحَةٌrelief
وَالعَيشُand life بَعدَafter فِراقِهاparting from her مَنكودُwretched
For being slain, after parting from Abla, is relief to me;
For killing after separation is rest for me,
And life after parting from her is wretched.
And living after parting from her is miserable.
ياO عَبلَAbla قَدalready دَنَتِhas drawn near المَنِيَّةُdeath فَاِندُبيso lament
إِنif كانَis جَفنُكِyour eyelid بِالدُموعِwith tears يَجودُgives generously
O Abla, death has drawn near, so lament me,
O Abla, death has drawn near, so mourn for me,
If your eyelid is generous with tears.
If your eyelids overflow with tears.
ياO عَبلَAbla إِنif تَبكيyou weep عَلَيَّfor me فَقَدthen already بَكىhas wept
صَرفُthe vicissitudes of الزَمانِTime عَلَيَّfor me وَهوَand it is حَسودُenvious
O Abla, if you weep for me, I have already been mourned
O Abla, if you cry for me, time's turns
By Time's vicissitudes, though Time is envious.
Have cried for me while being envious.
ياO عَبلَAbla إِنif سَفَكواthey shed دَميmy blood فَفَعائِليthen my deeds
فيon كُلِّevery يَومٍday ذِكرُهُنَّtheir remembrance جَديدُfresh
O Abla, if they shed my blood, then my deeds—
O Abla, if they shed my blood, my deeds
Their remembrance is fresh every day.
Are mentioned anew each day.
لَهفيmy anguish عَلَيكِfor you إِذاif بَقيتِyou are left سَبِيَّةًa captive woman
تَدعينَyou call for عَنتَرَAntar وَهوَwhile he is عَنكِfrom you بَعيدُfar away
How I grieve for you, should you be left a captive,
I yearn for you if you remain captive,
Calling for Antar while he is far from you.
Calling for Antara while he is far from you.
وَلَقَدand indeed لَقيتُI faced الفُرسَthe Persians ياO اِبنَةَdaughter of مالِكٍMalik
وَجُيوشُهاand their armies قَدalready ضاقَbecame too narrow عَنهاfor them البيدُthe deserts
And indeed I faced the Persians, O daughter of Malik,
And I have met the Persians, O daughter of Malik,
And the deserts were too narrow to contain their armies.
While their armies crowded the expanse.
وَتَموجُand they surge مَوجَlike the surge of البَحرِthe sea إِلّاexcept أَنَّهاthat they
لاقَتthey met أُسوداًlions فَوقَهُنَّupon them حَديدُiron
And they surged like the sea, except that they
They surged like the waves of the sea, except
Met lions clad in iron.
They met lions, while over them was iron.
جارواthey acted unjustly فَحَكَّمناso we appointed as judges الصَوارِمَthe keen swords بَينَناbetween us
فَقَضَتso they passed judgment وَأَطرافُand the points of الرِماحِthe spears شُهودُwitnesses
They were unjust, so we made keen swords judges between us;
They attacked so we judged between us with swords
So they passed judgment, and the spear-points were witnesses.
That passed judgement while spearheads bore witness.
ياO عَبلَAbla كَمhow many مِنof جَحفَلٍa vast army فَرَّقتُهُI scattered it
وَالجَوُّand the sky أَسوَدُblack وَالجِبالُand the mountains تَميدُsway
O Abla, how many a vast host I have scattered,
O Abla, how many regiments I dispersed
While the sky was black and the mountains swayed.
While the atmosphere was dark and the mountains swayed.
فَسَطاthen assailed عَلَيَّupon me الدَهرُTime سَطوَةَthe onslaught of غادِرٍa traitor
وَالدَهرُand Time يَبخُلُis miserly تارَةًat times وَيَجودُand is generous
Then Time fell upon me with a traitor's onslaught,
Time has subjected me to the injustice of a traitor,
And Time is sometimes miserly, sometimes generous.
And time is sometimes stingy and sometimes generous.
