أَمِor المِسكُmusk هَبَّwafted مَعَwith الريحِthe wind هَبَّهa gust
Is this, I wonder, the wind from the land of al-Sharabbah,
Is this the breeze from the land of Sharrabah,
or has musk wafted with the wind in a gust?
Or is it musk that blew with the breeze?
وَمِنand from دارِdwelling عَبلَةَAblah نارٌa fire بَدَتappeared
أَمِor البَرقُthe lightning سَلَّunsheathed مِنَfrom الغَيمِthe clouds عَضبَهits sharp sword
And has a fire appeared from Ablah's dwelling,
From the abode of Ablah, a fire appeared.
or has lightning drawn its sharp sword from the clouds?
Or did lightning strike from an angry cloud?
أَعَبلَةُO Ablah قَدindeed زادَhas grown شَوقيmy longing وَماand not
أَرىI see الدَهرَtime يُدنيbrings near إِلَيَّto me الأَحِبَّهthe loved ones
O Ablah, my longing has grown, and I do not
My longing for Ablah has increased,
see time bring my loved ones close to me.
Yet I do not see fate drawing my beloved near.
وَكَمand how much جَهدِhardship نائِبَةٍmisfortune قَدindeed لَقيتُI have faced
لِأَجلِكِfor your sake ياO بِنتَdaughter عَمّيmy paternal uncle وَنَكبَهand calamity
And how much hardship from misfortune I have endured,
How many calamities have I endured,
for your sake, O daughter of my uncle—and calamity too!
For your sake, O daughter of my uncle!
فَلَوfor if أَنَّthat عَينَيكِyour two eyes يَومَday اللِقاءِthe encounter

For had your eyes, on the day of battle,
If only your eyes could see me on the day we meet,
seen my stand, you would have loved me more.
It would increase the love you have for me.
يُفيضُmakes flow سِنانيmy spearhead دِماءَblood النُحورِthe throats
وَرُمحيand my spear يَشُكُّpierces مَعَalong with الدَرعِthe armor قَلبَهhis heart
My spearhead spills blood from throats,
My spear drips with the blood of sacrifices,
and my spear pierces his heart along with the armor.
And my lance pierces along with the armor.
وَأَفرَحُand I rejoice بِالسَيفِin the sword تَحتَbeneath الغُبارِthe dust
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle ضَرَبتُI struck بِهِwith it أَلفَa thousand ضَربَهa blow
And I rejoice in the sword beneath the dust,
I rejoice with the sword amidst the dust,
when I strike a thousand blows with it.
When I strike with it a thousand blows.
وَتَشهَدُand bears witness ليfor me الخَيلُthe horses يَومَday الطِعانِspear-fighting
بِأَنّيto the fact that I أُفَرِّقُهاI scatter them أَلفَa thousand سُربَهa band
And the horses bear witness for me on the day of spear-fighting,
The horses testify for me on the day of thrusting
that I scatter them into a thousand bands.
That I scatter them into a thousand flocks.
وَإِنand although كانَis جِلديmy skin يُرىis seen أَسوَداًblack
فَليyet I have فيin المَكارِمِnoble deeds عِزٌّhonor وَرُتبَهand rank
And though my skin is seen as black,
And if my skin appears black,
yet in noble deeds I have honor and rank.
I have glory and rank in chivalry.
وَلَوand if صَلَّتِprayed العُربُthe Arabs يَومَday الوَغىbattle
لِأَبطالِهاto their heroes كُنتُI would be لِلعُربِfor the Arabs كَعبَهKaaba
And if the Arabs prayed on the day of battle
If the Arabs prayed on the day of calamity
to their heroes, I would be the Arabs' Kaaba.
I would be the Arabs’ Ka’bah.
وَلَوand if أَنَّthat لِلمَوتِfor Death شَخصاًa bodily form يُرىcould be seen
لَرَوَّعتُهُI would terrify him وَلَأَكثَرتُand I would greatly increase رُعبَهhis fear
And if Death had a form that could be seen,
If death had a visible form,
I would terrify him and greatly increase his fear.
I would frighten it and intensify its fear.
