أَمِنis it because of سُهَيَّةَSuhayya دَمعُtears العَينِthe eye تَذريفُa streaming of tears
لَوif only أَنَّthat ذاthis مِنكِfrom you قَبلَbefore اليَومِtoday مَعروفُknown
Is it because of Suhayya that the eye's tears stream?
Is the shedding of tears from my eyes out of grief
If only this had been known of you before today!
Though this would have been a kindness from you before today
كَأَنَّهاas though she were يَومَon the day صَدَّتshe turned away ماnot تُكَلِّمُنيshe speaks to me

On the day she turned away without speaking to me, she was like
As though on the day she turned away and would not speak to me
a gazelle at Usfan, with a tranquil gaze and a stricken eye.
She was a wild animal, with a tender neck and shy gaze
تَجَلَّلَتنِيَshe covered me إِذwhen أَهوىswung down العَصاthe staff قِبَليtoward me

She covered me as the staff was swung down toward me,
When she raised her staff towards me, she was decked out
as though she were an idol, repeatedly visited and attended in devotion.
As though she was an idol, accustomed to being shrouded
المالُthe wealth مالُكُمُyour wealth وَالعَبدُand the slave عَبدُكُمُyour slave
فَهَلso will...? عَذابُكَyour punishment عَنّيfrom me اليَومَtoday مَصروفُturned away
The wealth is yours, and the slave is yours;
Your wealth is yours, and your slave is yours
so will your punishment be turned away from me today?
So is your torment upon me today diminished?

You forget my valor when a raid grows pregnant,
You forget my suffering when raiders attack
from which emerge the tall, long-limbed mares.
Charging out on their tall, swift horses

They emerge from it, their saddles already soaked
They charge forth, their saddles soaked
with water, spurred on by beardless young nobles.
By the water, stampeded by the raging knights

Often I deliver a gaping spear-thrust from the side;
I will stab with a clear, honorable blow
its victim's hand turns yellow while he is drained of blood.
Her brother's hand will turn yellow, and he will be drained
لاno شَكَّdoubt لِلمَرءِfor a man أَنَّthat الدَهرَtime ذوpossessed of خُلُفٍinconstancy

No man can doubt that time is inconstant;
There is no doubt that fate is fickle
in it, lover and beloved have parted.
It divides those united and familiar
