إِذاif لاقَيتَyou meet جَمعَthe gathering of بَنيthe sons of أَبانٍAban
فَإِنّيthen indeed I لائِمٌblaming لِلجَعدِof al-Ja'd لاحيrebuking
If you meet the gathering of the sons of Aban,
When you meet the tribe of Bani Aban
then indeed I blame al-Ja'd and rebuke him.
I blame the curly-haired one, not the smooth-skinned beauty
كَأَنَّas though مُؤَشَّرَscar-marked العَضُدَينِthe two upper arms حَجلاًa partridge
As though the man with scar-marked upper arms were a partridge,
As if the pointer of his two arms is a young mountain goat
waddling among salty wells.
Wandering between sand dunes in the wilderness
تَضَمَّنَreceived نِعمَتيmy favor فَغَداthen he went forth عَلَيهاagainst it
بُكوراًearly in the morning أَوor تَعَجَّلَhe hastened فيin الرَواحِthe evening
He received my favor, then went forth against it,
He enjoyed my gifts then at daybreak
early in the morning, or hastened at evening.
Hastened away without any farewell
أَلَمdid ... not? تَعلَمyou know لَحاكَmay He curse you اللَهُGod أَنّيthat I
أَجَمُّwithout a spear إِذاwhen لَقيتُI meet ذَويthose bearing الرِماحِthe spears
Did you not know—may God curse you—that I
Don't you know, may God disfigure your face
am spearless when I meet men bearing spears?
I am very generous when I meet the spearmen
كَسَوتُI clothed الجَعدَal-Ja'd جَعدَJa'd بَنيthe sons of أَبانٍAban
سِلاحِيَmy weapons بَعدَafter عُريٍnakedness وَاِفتِضاحِand disgrace
I clothed al-Ja'd, Ja'd of the sons of Aban,
I clothed the curly-haired one, the curly-haired one of Bani Aban
in my weapons, after his nakedness and disgrace.
My weapons after being stripped naked and utterly disgraced
