أُعاتِبُI reproach دَهراًtime لاnot يَلينُyields لِناصِحِto an adviser
وَأُخفيand I conceal الجَوىanguish فيin القَلبِthe heart وَالدَمعُand tears فاضِحيbetraying me
I reproach time, which will not yield to an adviser.
I blame an unrelenting fate, though advisors reproach me,
And I hide anguish in my heart, yet my tears betray me.
And I conceal my love's longing, while tears expose me.
وَقَوميand my people مَعَwith الأَيّامِthe days عَونٌa help عَلىagainst دَميmy blood
وَقَدand indeed طَلَبونيthey pursued me بِالقَناwith spears وَالصَفائِحِand sword blades
And my people join with the days to help shed my blood.
My people aid the days against me with sword and spear,
And they have pursued me with spears and sword blades.
Hunting me down with blades unsheathed from every side.
وَقَدand indeed أَبعَدونيthey drove me away عَنfrom حَبيبٍa beloved أُحِبُّهُI love him
فَأَصبَحتُso I became فيin قَفرٍa wasteland عَنِfrom الإِنسِhumankind نازِحِfar removed
And they have driven me away from a beloved whom I love.
They have estranged me from my beloved, whom I love,
So I am now in a wasteland, far from humankind.
So I dwell now in the wilderness, far from all mankind.
وَأَيسَرُand easier مِنthan كَفّيmy palm إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle مَدَدتُهI stretch it out
لِنَيلِto obtain عَطاءٍa gift مَدُّstretching out عُنقيmy neck لِذابِحِto a slaughterer
And easier than holding out my hand
Easier than extending my hands for a gift
To receive a gift is stretching my neck out to a slaughterer.
Would be to bare my neck to the executioner's knife.
فَياso O رَبِّmy Lord لاdo not تَجعَلmake حَياتيmy life مَذَمَّةًa disgrace
وَلاand not مَوتَتيmy death بَينَamong النِساءِthe women النَوائِحِwailing
So, O my Lord, do not make my life a disgrace,
O Lord, let not my life end in shame,
Nor let my death be among wailing women.
Nor my death be amidst wailing women's cries.
وَلَكِنand yet قَتيلاًone slain يَدرُجُwalk الطَيرُthe birds حَولَهُaround him
وَتَشرَبُand drink غِربانُravens الفَلاof the wilderness مِنfrom جَوانِحيmy ribs
But let me be one slain, around whom the birds walk,
Rather, let me die with the birds circling above,
And the ravens of the wilderness drink from my ribs.
And ravens drinking their fill from my bleeding sides.
