O ʿAbl, dwell in the valley of sand, secure
From foes; even if threatened, do not fear.
فدونَfor before بيتكyour house أسدٌlions فيin أناملهاtheir fingers
بيْضٌgleaming swords تقُدُّcleave أَعاليthe tops of البيضthe helmets والحَجَفِand leather shields
For before your house stand lions, in whose fingers lie
Gleaming swords that cleave the tops of helmets and leather shields.
للهto God دَرُّexcellence (in praise) عَبْسٍʿAbs لقدْindeed بلَغواthey attained
كلَّall الفخارِِglory ونالواand they gained غايةthe height of َ الشِّرفِhonor
God bless ʿAbs! Truly, they have attained
All glory and reached the utmost height of honor.

تحتَbeneath العجَاجةthe dust cloud ِ يهْويit hurtles بيwith me إلىtoward التلفِdeath
They feared battle when they saw my horse
Beneath the dust cloud, hurtling with me toward death.
ثمَّthen اقْتفواthey followed أثريmy trail منْfrom بعدِafter ماthat علمواthey knew
أنَّthat المنيةdeath َ سهمٌan arrow غيرnot منصرفِturning aside
Then they followed my trail after they had learned
That death is an arrow that never turns aside.
خضتُI plunged through الغبارthe dust ومهريand my colt أدهمٌblack حلكintensely black
فَعادَso it returned مخْتضِباًstained بالدَّمّwith blood والجِيَفِand carrion
I plunged through the dust, my colt pitch-black;
So it returned stained with blood and carrion.
ماnot زِلْتُI ceased أُنْصِفُI treat fairly خصْميmy foe وهوَwhile he يظْلمنيwrongs me
حتىuntil غداhe became منْthrough حساميmy sharp sword غيرَnot منتصفobtaining redress
I kept treating my foe fairly while he wronged me,
Until my sword left him without redress.

And if they fault the blackness in which I have been clothed,
A pearl, too, is hidden by a robe of shell.
