Shall I suffer injustice, with my spear and sword to defend me?

And humiliation, when my honor leads me by the reins?

And mine is the might of a sinewy-armed lion in his lair,

who defends his cubs and fights to protect them.

My neighbor stands honored in every place,

and I hold myself too dear to let my standing be debased.

I forsook the lofty dwellings, drawn by

the gleam of keen blades beneath the shadow of battle-dust.

They offered me the choice of a cup of wine, yet I found

only a burning ache amid blazing war.

I shall leave you, no longer visiting your dwellings,

and seek it out at every fall of darkness.

I pursue my enemies with every noble champion,

and every lion, valiant in combat.

May I be denied sleep if I do not lead them grim-faced,

bearing noble riders in the saddles of noble steeds.

They brandish spears in their hands, as though

they had been made to drink unmixed wine from throats.

When they level them for thrusting, you would think them

stars guided by moons at their full.

And bright swords beneath the shadows of a dust-cloud

are like morning raindrops in the blackness of clouds.

Come, sing to me, you two, with neighing, for it is

my music, and shimmering blood is my drinking company.

And set my saddle on the scorching ground, you two, for it is

my noonday resting place; the fluttering banners are my tents.

And do not tell me, you two, of life's pleasures, for

attaining my hopes is my health and my sickness.

In raiding I find life's richest delight,

and in glory, not in drink and food.

Why should I accept humiliation as my lot, when my keen sword

is bold against necks and never blunt?

I have a steed that matches the winds when it runs,

to a distance beyond even a far-off goal.

It answers the mind's signals with keen awareness,

and leaves you no need of whip or bridle for it.
