أَلاAh! قاتَلَmay ... curse اللَهُGod الطُلولَthe ruins البَوالِيtimeworn
وَقاتَلَand may ... curse ذِكراكَyour remembrance of السِنينَthe years الخَوالِياgone by
Ah, may God curse the timeworn ruins,
and curse your remembrance of the bygone years,
وَقَولَكَand your saying لِلشَيءِabout the thing الَّذيwhich لاnot تَنالُهُyou attain it
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle حَلاit delights فيin العَينِthe eye ياoh لَيتَif only ذاthis لِياmine
and your saying of a thing you cannot attain,
when it delights the eye, 'Oh, if only this were mine!'
وَنَحنُand we مَنَعناwe protected بِالفَروقِat al-Faruq نِساءَناour women
نُطَرِّفُwe fend off عَنهاfrom them مُشعِلاتٍwide-spreading war bands غَواشِياsweeping down
And we protected our women at al-Faruq,
fending off wide-spreading war bands sweeping down upon them.
حَلَفناwe swore لَهُمto them وَالخَيلُwhile the horses تَرديgalloped بِناwith us مَعاًtogether
نُزايِلُهُمwe part from them حَتّىuntil يَهِرّواthey snarl at العَوالِياthe spearheads
We swore to them, as the horses galloped with us together,
not to leave them until they snarled at the spearheads—
عَوالِيَspearheads زُرقاًblue مِنfrom رِماحِthe lances of رُدَينَةٍRudayna
هَريرَthe snarling of الكِلابِthe dogs يَتَّقينَthey guard against الأَفاعِياthe vipers
blue spearheads from Rudayna's lances—
as dogs snarl when guarding against vipers.
تَفادَيتُمُyou shrank from one another أَستاهَrumps of نيبٍold she-camels تَجَمَّعَتgathered
عَلىover رِمَّةٍdecayed remains مِنَof العِظامِthe bones تَفادِياshrinking from one another
You shied away like the rumps of old she-camels gathered
over decaying bones, shrinking from one another.
أَلَمdid ... not? تَعلَمواyou know أَنَّthat الأَسِنَّةَthe spearheads أَحرَزَتsafeguarded
بَقِيَّتَناour remnant لَوif أَنَّthat لِلدَهرِthrough time باقِياanyone enduring
Did you not know that the spearheads safeguarded
the remnant of us—if anyone could outlast time?
وَنَحفَظُand we guard عَوراتِthe private parts of النِساءِthe women وَنَتَّقيand we take precautions
عَلَيهِنَّfor them أَنthat يَلقينَthey encounter يَوماًone day مَخازِياdisgraces
We guard the women's honor and take care
for them, lest they one day suffer disgrace.
أَبَيناwe refused أَبَيناwe refused أَنthat تَضِبَّshould drool لِثاتُكُمyour gums
عَلىover مُرشِقاتٍslender women كَالظِباءِlike gazelles عَواطِياreaching up to browse
We refused, we refused, to let your gums drool
over slender women, like gazelles reaching up to browse.
وَقُلتُand I said لِمَنto whoever قَدalready أَخطَرَexposed to danger المَوتَdeath نَفسَهُhis own life
مَنwho لِأَمرٍfor an undertaking حازِمٍsound قَدalready بَداhas occurred لِياto me
And I said to one who had exposed his life to death:
'Ho! Who will undertake a sound plan that has occurred to me?'
وَقُلتُand I said لَهُمto them رُدّواdrive back المُغيرَةَthe raiding cavalry عَنfrom هَوىthe desire of
سَوابِقِهاits swiftest horses وَأَقبِلوهاand confront it النَواصِياthe forelocks
And I told them, 'Drive the raiding cavalry back from the course
its swiftest horses desire; meet it forelock to forelock.'
وَإِنّاand indeed we نَقودُwe lead الخَيلَthe horses تَحكيresemble رُؤوسُهاtheir heads
رُؤوسَthe heads of نِساءٍwomen لاnot يَجِدنَthey find فَوالِياfemale lice-pickers
And indeed we lead horses whose heads resemble
the heads of women who find no one to pick out their lice.
فَماso ... not وَجَدوناthey found us بِالفُروقِat al-Furuq أُشابَةًa mixed rabble
وَلاnor كُشُفاًshieldless men وَلاnor دُعيناwere we called مَوالِياdependents
So they did not find us at al-Furuq a motley rabble,
nor shieldless men, nor were we called dependents.
تَعالَواcome إِلىto ماwhat تَعلَمونَyou know فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
أَرىI see الدَهرَtime لاnot يُنجيsaves مِنَfrom المَوتِdeath ناجِياany survivor
Come to what you know, for I
see that time saves no survivor from death.
