إِذاif كانَis أَمرُthe decree of اللَهِGod أَمراًa matter يُقَدَّرُordained
فَكَيفَthen how يَفِرُّflees المَرءُa person مِنهُfrom it وَيَحذَرُand is wary
If God's decree is a matter ordained,
Then how can a man flee it and guard against it?
وَمَنand who ذاis it that يَرُدُّturns back المَوتَdeath أَوor يَدفَعُwards off القَضاfate
وَضَربَتُهُand its stroke مَحتومَةٌinevitable لَيسَdoes not تَعثَرُfalter
And who can turn back death or ward off fate,
When its stroke is inevitable and never falters?
لَقَدindeed هانَbecame insignificant عِنديto me الدَهرُtime لَمّاwhen عَرَفتُهُI knew it

Time became of little account to me once I knew it,
And I am well acquainted with what calamities bring.
وَلَيسَand are not سِباعُbeasts of prey البَرِّthe land مِثلَlike ضِباعِهِits hyenas

And the land's beasts of prey are not like its hyenas,
Nor is everyone who plunges into battle dust Antar.
سَلواask صَرفَthe changing fortune of هَذاthis الدَهرِage كَمhow many شَنَّit launched غارَةًa raid
فَفَرَّجتُهاso I repelled it وَالمَوتُwhile death فيهاin it مُشَمِّرُgirded for action
Ask this age's changing fortune how many raids it has launched,
Which I repelled, while death stood girded for battle in their midst,
بِصارِمِwith a keen blade of عَزمٍresolve لَوif ضَرَبتُI struck بِحَدِّهِwith its edge

With a keen blade of resolve—were I to strike with its edge
The darkness of night, it would flee, stumbling over the stars.

Let me strive earnestly in pursuit of glory,
So I may attain my desire, or die and be held blameless.
وَلاand do not تَختَشواfear مِمّاof what يُقَدَّرُis decreed فيin غَدٍtomorrow

And do not fear what is decreed for tomorrow,
For no bearer of news has come to us from the unseen realm.

And many a warner has come to us with warnings,
Yet proved a messenger bringing tidings of joy.

Stand and watch my deeds, O Abla, and witness
My spear thrusts when the murky battle dust rises.

You will see a hero hurling horsemen down, laughing,
And returning from them, disheveled and dust-covered.

And he does not turn back until he leaves behind skulls
Through which the south wind passes, whistling,

And the bodies of men, around which birds settle,
Until they see the desert's wild beasts and take flight.
