Calamities stretched their arms toward me,
The times have extended their reach to me
and fought me, then saw what terrified them.
And fought against me, and saw what alarmed them
ياO حادِثاتِcalamities الدَهرِof time قُرّيbe still وَاِهجَعيand sleep
فَهِمَّتيfor my resolve قَدalready كَشَفَتhas lifted قِناعَهاits veil
O calamities of time, be still and sleep;
O times of fate, rest and retire
for my resolve has lifted its veil.
For my resolve has uncovered their masks
ماnever دُستُI trod فيin أَرضِthe land العُداةِof the enemies غُدوَةًat dawn

Never have I trodden the enemies' land at dawn
I did not tread the land of enemies at dawn
without a torrent of blood watering its ground.
Except the torrent of blood watered its expanse
وَيلٌwoe لِشَيبانٍto Shayban إِذاwhen صَبَّحتُهاI raided them at dawn
وَأَرسَلَتand sent forth بيضُgleaming الظُبىsword-edges شُعاعَهاtheir rays
Woe to Shayban when I raid them at dawn,
Woe to gray hair when I wake it up
and gleaming sword-edges cast forth their rays,
And the eggs of darkness send out their rays
وَخاضَand plunged رُمحيmy spear فيinto حَشاهاtheir entrails وَغَداand began

and my spear plunges into their entrails and goes on
My spear plunged into their midst and marched on
piercing their ribs along with their armor,
Shattering their ribs along with their armor
وَأَصبَحَتand became نِساؤُهاtheir women نَوادِباًmourners

and their women become mourners
And their women became keeners
over men, bewailing their yearning.
For men whose quarreling they complain of
وَحَرُّand the heat أَنفاسيof my breaths إِذاif ماever (emphatic) قابَلَتmet

And the heat of my breaths, if ever they met
Hot is my breath when it meets
a rock on the day of parting, would melt it.
On the day we part, a boulder blocking its path
ياO عَبلَAbla كَمhow often تَنعَقُcaw غِربانُravens الفَلاof the wilderness

O Abla, how often the ravens of the wilderness caw!
O nights, how the ravens of separation croak
My heart has grown weary of hearing them in the darkness.
My heart is tired of hearing them in the darkness

I left ruins, and in them was a band
I left ruins wherein is a band
that had abandoned its hopes of my companionship.
That has cut off from my company its hopes
