فَلَوfor if لاقَيتَنيyou had met me وَعَلَيَّand upon me دِرعيmy coat of mail

For had you met me wearing my coat of mail,
For had you met me clad in iron mail,
you would have learned why coats of mail are worn.
You would have known why armor must be borne.

I left Jubaylah, son of Abu ʿAdi,
I left Jubaylah, son of Abi 'Adi,
with thick, fresh blood soaking his clothes.
His garments drenched in fresh and clotting gore.
وَآخَرَand another مِنهُمُof them أَجرَرتُI made him drag رُمحيmy spear
وَفيand in البَجَلِيِّthe Bajali man مِعبَلَةٌa broad-headed arrow وَقيعُkeen-edged
And another of them I made drag my spear;
Another of their kin I ran my spear through,
and in the Bajali man lay a keen, broad-headed arrow.
And in the Bajali lodged a sharpened blade.
