Between al-‘Aqiq and Burqat Thahmad
Between Aqiq and Burqah Thahmad
Stand the ruins of ‘Abla, their old site plainly visible.
Are remnants of a dwelling of Abelah the faded habitat
ياO مَسرَحَgrazing ground of الآرامِthe gazelles فيin واديthe valley of الحِمىal-Hima (protected pasture)
هَلdoes ...? فيكَwithin you ذوone possessed of شَجَنٍsorrow يَروحُgoes in the evening وَيَغتَديand goes in the morning
O grazing ground of gazelles in al-Hima's valley,
O theater of tranquility in the valley of sanctuary
Does one burdened with sorrow wander in you at dusk and dawn?
Is there anyone there distressed, coming and going?
فيat أَيمَنِthe right side of العَلَمينِthe two landmarks دَرسُeffacement of مَعالِمٍtraces

To the right of the two landmarks lie faded traces—
In the auspicious valley, the ruins of a home
There my endurance was sapped, and my composure fled—
Were my skin toughened and my determination exposed?

Of every enchantress whose neck turned
The neck of every beauty that turned around
Playfully, like the neck of a supple gazelle.
Frolicking like the neck of a slender antelope
ياO عَبلَ‘Abla كَمhow often يُشجىis grieved فُؤاديmy heart بِالنَوىby separation
وَيَروعُنيand frightens me صَوتُthe cry of الغُرابِthe raven الأَسوَدِblack
O ‘Abla, how often my heart is grieved by separation,
O Abel how my heart is saddened by the groves
And the cry of the black raven frightens me.
And the voice of the raven startles me
كَيفَhow السَلُوُّforgetting وَماand never سَمِعتُI heard حَمائِماًdoves
يَندُبنَlament إِلّاexcept كُنتُI was أَوَّلَthe first مُنشِدِsinger
How can I forget? Never have I heard doves
How is solitude when I have not heard doves
Lament without being the first to chant.
Except I was the first mourner
وَلَقَدand indeed حَبَستُI held back الدَمعَthe tears لاnot بُخلاًout of stinginess بِهِwith them
يَومَon the day of الوَداعِfarewell عَلىover رُسومِthe traces of المَعهَدِthe familiar dwelling-place
And indeed I held back my tears, not begrudging them,
I held back my tears not out of stinginess
On the day of farewell, over the traces of the old dwelling.
The day of farewell over the relics of the habitat
وَسَأَلتُand I asked طَيرَthe bird of الدَوحِthe great trees كَمhow many مِثليlike me شَجاit saddened
بِأَنينِهِwith its moaning وَحَنينِهِand its yearning cry المُتَرَدِّدِrepeated
And I asked the bird of the great trees how many like me it had saddened
And I asked the birds of Dew how many like me
With its moaning and its recurring cries of longing.
Were wounded by their moaning and yearning echoes
نادَيتُهُI called to it وَمَدامِعيand my tears مُنهَلَّةٌstreaming
أَينَhow far الخَلِيُّthe carefree one مِنَfrom الشَجِيِّthe sorrowful one المُكمَدِconsumed by grief
I called to it, my tears streaming:
I called him while my tears were pouring down
How far the carefree are from the sorrowful, consumed by grief!
Where is the intimate from the painful faded one?
لَوif كُنتَyou were مِثليlike me ماnot لَبِثتَyou lingered مَلاوَةٌa while

Were you like me, you would not linger long
If you were like me you would not have lingered as sweetness
And call out from the dune's bending branch.
And chirped on the branch of the softly leaning palm

They raised the canopies over faces that shone
They raised the domes over faces that shone
Within them, eclipsing al-Suha in al-Farqad.
Therein the delicate moles in the cheeks disappeared
وَاِستَوكَفواand they drew forth ماءَthe water of العُيونِthe eyes بِأَعيُنٍwith eyes

And they drew tears from eyes by means of eyes
And they were content with the water of the eyes with eyes
Kohled with enchantment, not with antimony.
Darkened with magic, not kohl

And the sun among faces rosy and radiant,
While the sun is between someone flushed and someone pale
And the bough among figures sashed and necklaced:
And the branch between someone adorned and bejeweled

They appear among necks and curving forms,
They appear between wraps and cloaks
And necklaces of pearls and chrysolite.
And necklaces of pearls and peridot

They said, 'The meeting is tomorrow at the bend of al-Liwa.'
They said tomorrow’s meeting is at the winding sands
And how long the love-maddened one's yearning for tomorrow!
And the longest yearning of the enamored one until tomorrow
وَتَخالُand you would think أَنفاسيmy breaths إِذاwhen رَدَّدتُهاI repeat them

And you would think my sighs, when I repeat them,
And my breath seems to fade when I echo it
Among the ruins, had effaced a file's grooves.
Between the hills, it erased the engravings on the cooled sword

And many an unknown wilderness have I traversed
An unknown battle I entered
With the point of a spear whose fire did not die out.
With the spear whose fire did not subside

I came to it at dawn with young men of ‘Abs,
I surprised them with proud Arabian youths
Each an awe-inspiring warrior, proud-necked in battle.
The best of every handsome prey in war

And there you see the banners and spears waving,
And you see the flags fluttering and the warriors
And you see the dust-cloud like a foaming sea.
As if an ocean frothing with waves

There the people of ‘Abs behold my stand,
There you can see the clan of Abs observing me
While horses stumble over supple spear-shafts.
And the horses stumbling in the soft sand

And flashes of thin, bright swords gleam
And the gleam of the white swords glittering
In a battle-front like a thundering cloud.
Against cheeks like thunderclouds rumbling

And the slender tawny spears look like
And the braids of the black swords as if they were
Stars of a black night beneath the dust-cloud.
Under the darkness, stars of a black night

And the long-necked horses' hooves upon smooth rock
And the hooves of the spirited horses on the battlefield
Are like thunderbolts across the broad plain's barren wastes.
Like lightning bolts in the expanse of the desert

I confronted their mounted host and plunged into their dust;
I engaged its procession and entered its dust
I quenched the embers of their blazing flame.
I quenched the embers of its blazing fervor
وَكَرَرتُand I charged again وَالأَبطالُand the champions بَينَamid تَصادُمٍclashes

And I charged again, while champions were locked in clashes,
And I repeated while the heroes were amidst
Mutual assaults, banding together, and fierce resistance.
Clashing, attacking, allying, and resolve
وَفَوارِسُand the horsemen of الهَيجاءِbattle بَينَamong مُمانِعٍone resisting

And battle's horsemen—some resisting,
And the horsemen of the fray amidst preventing
Some defending, some deceiving, some raging.
Defending, deceiving, and being reinforced
وَالبيضُand the bright swords تَلمَعُgleam وَالرِماحُand the spears عَواسِلٌquivering

And the bright swords gleam, while the spears quiver,
The white swords gleamed and the spears were burning
And the men are some struck down, some bound,
While the people were embellished and armed
وَمُوَسَّدٍand one pillowed تَحتَbeneath التُرابِthe earth وَغَيرُهُand another besides him

And some pillowed beneath the earth, while others
And propped under the soil while others
Groan upon the earth, unpillowed.
Above the soil were moaning without being propped

And the air is dust-dark, while the stars shine,
The atmosphere was dark and the stars shining
And the horizon is dust-veiled, its clouds dark grey.
And the horizon dusty with the gray rope
أَقحَمتُI drove headlong مُهريmy colt تَحتَbeneath ظِلِّthe shadow of عَجاجَةٍa dust-cloud

I drove my colt beneath a dust-cloud's shadow,
I plunged my stallion under the shade of a mare
With a slender spear's point and an Indian-steel sword.
With the spear, feeble and bent
وَرَغَمتُand I rubbed in dust أَنفَthe nose of الحاسِدينَthe envious بِسَطوَتيwith my might

And with my might I rubbed the envious men's noses in dust,
And I humbled the envious with my power
So they bowed and fell prostrate before it.
They knelt to it, bowed and prostrated
