تَرَكتُI left جُرَيَّةَJurayya العَمرِيَّal-ʿAmri فيهِin him
شَديدُstrong العَيرِthe blade's ridge مُعتَدِلٌstraight سَديدُwell-aimed
I left Jurayya al-ʿAmri with a shaft lodged in him,
stout-ridged, straight and true.
تَرَكتُI left بَنيthe sons of الهُجَيمِal-Hujaym لَهُمfor them دَوارٌa whirling motion
إِذاwhenever تَمضيmoves on جَماعَتُهُمtheir company تَعودُreturns
I left the Banu al-Hujaym in a whirl;
whenever their company moves on, it turns back.
إِذاwhen يَقَعُfall السِهامُthe arrows بِجانِبَيهِat his two sides
تَأَخَّرَhe draws back قابِعاًcrouching فيهِin him صُدودُaversion
When arrows fall on either side of him,
he draws back, crouching, full of aversion.
فَإِنso if يَبرَأhe recovers فَلَمthen did not أَنفِثI blow lightly عَلَيهِover him
وَإِنand if يُفقَدhe is lost فَحُقَّthen is deserved لَهُfor him الفُقودُperishing
So if he recovers, I breathed no healing charm over him;
and if he perishes, then death is his due.
وَهَلand does يَدريknow جُرَيَّةُJurayya أَنَّthat نَبليmy arrows
يَكونُis جَفيرَهاtheir quiver البَطَلُthe champion النَجيدُthe valiant
And does Jurayya know that my arrows
have the valiant champion for their quiver?
كَأَنَّas though رِماحَهُمtheir spears أَشطانُropes بِئرٍa well
لَهاit has فيin كُلِّevery مَدلَجَةٍa water-drawing track خُدودُfurrows
Their spears are like the ropes of a well,
with furrows along every water-drawing track.
