Ask, O Abla, Amr about my deeds

Against your enemies who sought to fight me.

Ask them what my answer to them was,

If your belief in my words should falter.

They came to us in darkness on fine horses,

    Lean-flanked, like she-ghouls.

And among them was every mighty, stubborn warrior,

Fierce in battle, with twisted mustaches.

And when they kindled the fire of death

With the points of tall, straightened spears,

A black man from the clan of Abs quenched it

With a white, keen-edged blade of fine polish.

Whenever drawn, it runs with fresh crimson blood,

And its edge pierces solid mountains.

And with a brown spear—whenever my hand raises it,

Its spearhead gleams like the crescent moon.

    تُسابِقُهُ المَنِيَّةُ في شِمالي

    You see it when it bends in my right hand;

Death races it in my left hand.

I gave you a pledge, a pledge of truth,

And followed my words with deeds.

And I scattered the battalions with a blow

At which the champions among men fall.

And no brave warrior ever turned to flee

Without a figure in my likeness before him.

I filled the earth with fear of my keen sword,

So people spent the night in talk and gossip.

And if I broke my promise to you, they would say—

The sons of base men—that I had forgotten you.
