Ah, raven of parting, as you fly,

lend me a wing; I have lost my fingers.

I wonder, have you learned today of Malik's killing

and his fall in humiliation and disgrace?

If it is true, then the stars, for his loss,

vanish, and the sun and moon plunge down after him.

It was indeed a day, black as night and grim,

whose affliction the night-visitor of calamity fears.

To God belong the eyes of whoever saw one like Malik,

a people's slaughtered victim, because two horses raced!

So would that they had not run half a bowshot,

and would that they had not been released for a wager!

And would that they had both died together in some town,

and Qays had missed them, so neither would be seen!

Indeed, they brought doom and a mighty war

that wipes out the chiefs of Ghatafan's people.

And indeed they brought doom that led to Malik's death,

and he was generous and noble toward the high-born.

And in battle he defended its honor,

and in the charge he struck with every kind of spear-thrust.

With his aid I would strike when the foes advanced in earnest,

on the morning of battle, toward me with every Yemeni blade.

His loss and his tragic fate have indeed shattered my pillar,

and left my heart throbbing without cease.

Oh, my grief! How did he slump from his steed,

while neither my sword nor my spear-point was beside him?

    فَيا لَيتَهُ لَمّا رَماهُ رَماني

    A resolute archer shot him with death's arrow;

oh, would that he had shot me when he shot him!

Then you will see, if I live on after you,

and fate and a long stretch of time give me the chance.

And I swear in truth: had you lived for one glance,

your eyes would surely have rejoiced in it when you saw me.
