Ah, O dwelling of ‘Abla at al-Tawi,

like tattoo traces on a bride’s palm,

like writing on scrolls from Kisra’s time,

which he then gave to a foreigner of unintelligible speech.

Is it a conjunction of calamities, when there rise

the sons of Jarm to wage war on the sons of ‘Adi?

When they clash, you hear a sound among them,

faint—not the sound of a Mashrafi sword,

nor of piercing thrusts emerging from them,

with spear-stabs like the ropes of wells.

And Thu‘al ibn ‘Amr had abandoned them—

    their Salamani and the Jarwali.
