Ah, Abla, you have broken the pledges,
And your former bond has turned to estrangement.

And youth has not passed, nor have we reached middle age,
Nor has time worn out anything new of ours.

And our keen swords are still sharp,
With them our fingers cleave iron.

Ask the Fazārīs about us—when
We soothed our livers by taking vengeance on their horsemen.

قُبَيلَshortly before الصُبحِdawn يَلطِمنَthey beat الخُدوداthe cheeks
And we left their women bewildered,
Just before dawn, beating their cheeks.
مَلَأناwe filled سائِرَall الأَقطارِthe regions خَوفاًwith fear

We filled all the lands with fear,
So the world's peoples became our slaves.
وَجاوَزناand we surpassed الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades فيin عُلاهاtheir loftiness
وَلَمand did not نَترُكwe leave لِقاصِدِناfor anyone seeking us وُفوداa way of approach
And we surpassed the Pleiades in their lofty height,
And left no way of approach for anyone seeking us.

When a boy of ours reaches weaning age,
Our enemies fall prostrate before him.
فَمَنso whoever يَقصِدcomes بِداهِيَةٍwith calamity إِلَيناtoward us

So whoever comes against us bearing calamity,
Will find among us mighty men—lions.
وَيَومَand on the day البَذلِof giving نُعطيwe give ماwhat مَلَكناwe possess
وَنَملاand we fill الأَرضَthe earth إِحساناًwith kindness وَجوداand generosity
And on the day of giving, we give all we own,
And we fill the earth with kindness and generosity.

And in every war we shoe our horses
With bloodied bones or skins.

So is there anyone to convey to al-Nuʿmān, on our behalf,
A message that will reach him aright,

When the sons of the non-Arabs come rushing back,
Having turned tail and lowered their banners?
