A heart the reprover cannot sway,

And an eye whose sleep is always scant.

I have wrestled with misfortunes, so to me

The ugly deeds of my time and the fair alike have become trifles.

And once you threatened me, O Amr,

With words whose truth has no proof.

You will learn which of us will remain laid low,

Snatched away by slender spears and blades.

And whose wife is taken captive and spends the evening

    Grief-stricken, her tears streaming.

Do you mention Abla and still spend the night alive,

While before her tent stands a fearsome lion?

And do you seek to meet me, though my sword

Crushes the massive mountain with its stroke?
