أَلاAh! ياO دارَdwelling of عَبلَةَ‘Abla بِالطَويِّat al-Tawi
كَرَجعِlike the traces of الوَشمِtattooing فيon كَفِّthe palm of الهَدِيِّthe bride
Ah, O dwelling of ‘Abla at al-Tawi,
Oh Abila of the winding roads
like tattoo traces on a bride’s palm,
Like henna patterns on the palm of the gift giver
كَوَحيِlike the writing of صَحائِفٍscrolls مِنfrom عَهدِthe time of كِسرىKisra
فَأَهداهاthen he gave them as a gift لِأَعجَمَto a foreigner طِمطِمِيِّof unintelligible speech
like writing on scrolls from Kisra’s time,
Or scrolls of bygone days from Chosroes' reign
which he then gave to a foreigner of unintelligible speech.
That he gifted to the stammering foreigner
أَمِنis it among زَوِّthe conjunction of الحَوادِثِcalamities يَومَon the day تَسموrise
بَنوthe sons of جُرمٍJarm لِحَربِto wage war on بَنيthe sons of عَدِيِّ‘Adi
Is it a conjunction of calamities, when there rise
Are you now safe from calamities on the day
the sons of Jarm to wage war on the sons of ‘Adi?
The Bani Jurhum tribe wars with Bani Adwan?
إِذاwhen اِضطَرَبواthey clash سَمِعتَyou hear الصَوتَthe sound فيهِمamong them
خَفيّاًfaint غَيرَother than صَوتِthe sound of المَشرَفِيِّthe Mashrafi sword
When they clash, you hear a sound among them,
When they are roused, you hear the muffled sounds amongst them
faint—not the sound of a Mashrafi sword,
Not the voice of the watchman up high
وَغَيرَand other than نَوافِذٍpiercing thrusts يَخرُجنَthey emerge مِنهُمfrom them
بِطَعنٍwith spear-stabs مِثلَlike أَشطانِthe ropes of الرَكِيِّthe wells
nor of piercing thrusts emerging from them,
Nor the windows whence emerge from them
with spear-stabs like the ropes of wells.
Stabs like the blades of the mattock.
وَقَدand already خَذَلَتهُمُhad abandoned them ثُعَلُThu‘al بنُson of عَمروٍ‘Amr
سَلامانيَّهُمtheir Salamani وَالجَروَلِيِّand the Jarwali
And Thu‘al ibn ‘Amr had abandoned them—
And Thu'al ibn Amr has betrayed them
their Salamani and the Jarwali.
Both their Suleimani and their Jerwali
