سَلاhas moved on القَلبُthe heart عَمّاfrom what كانَused to يَهوىloves وَيَطلُبُand seeks
وَأَصبَحَand has become لاnot يَشكوcomplains وَلاand not يَتَعَتَّبُvoices reproach
The heart has moved on from what it once loved and sought,
The heart has ceased craving what it once desired and sought,
And now it neither complains nor voices reproach.
And now complains and laments no more.
صَحاsobered بَعدَafter سُكرٍdrunkenness وَاِنتَخىand asserted its pride بَعدَafter ذِلَّةٍhumiliation
وَقَلبُand the heart الَّذيthe one who يَهوىloves العُلاglory يَتَقَلَّبُkeeps changing
It has sobered after drunkenness and regained its pride after humiliation,
It sobered after intoxication and revived after humiliation,
And the heart of one who loves glory is ever changing.
While the heart that aspires the heights continues tossing and turning.
إِلىfor كَمhow long أُداريI placate مَنone who تُريدُshe wants مَذَلَّتيmy humiliation
وَأَبذُلُand I expend جُهديmy effort فيin رِضاهاher approval وَتَغضَبُand she grows angry
How long must I placate one who wants my humiliation,
How long will I indulge one who seeks my humiliation?
And expend my effort to please her, while she grows angry?
I exert myself to please her yet she grows angry.
لَهاit has دَولَةٌa reign مَعلَومَةٌknown ثُمَّthen تَذهَبُit passes away
Ubayla, the days of beauty are few;
The days of beauty, O Ubayla, are few,
It has a reign of known duration, then passes away.
They have an appointed term then they depart.
فَلاso do not تَحسَبيyou suppose أَنّيthat I عَلىabout البُعدِseparation نادِمٌregretful
وَلاnor القَلبُthe heart فيin نارِthe fire الغَرامِpassion مُعَذَّبُtormented
So do not think I regret being apart,
Do not think I regret the separation,
Nor is the heart tormented in the fire of passion.
Nor is my heart tormented by the fires of passion.
وَقَدand indeed قُلتُI have said إِنّيthat I قَدalready سَلَوتُI have moved on عَنِfrom الهَوىlove
وَمَنand one who كانَis مِثليlike me لاnot يَقولُspeaks وَيَكذِبُand lies
And I have said that I have already moved on from love;
And I have said that I am done with love and longing,
And one like me does not speak a lie.
One like me does not speak untruth.
هَجَرتُكِI have forsaken you فَاِمضيso go حَيثُwherever شِئتِyou wish وَجَرِّبيand try
مِنَamong الناسِpeople غَيريsomeone other than me فَاللَبيبُfor the discerning person يُجَرِّبُtests things
I have forsaken you; so go where you wish, and try
I have left you, so go wherever you wish and try
Someone else among people, for the discerning put things to the test.
Someone other than me, for the wise one experiments.
لَقَدindeed ذَلَّhas been abased مَنone who أَمسىspends the evening عَلىat رَبعِthe site مَنزِلٍa dwelling
يَنوحُwails عَلىover رَسمِtraces الدِيارِthe dwellings وَيَندُبُand laments
Truly abased is he who spends the evening at a dwelling's site,
Indeed he who finds himself by night at a place of rest
Wailing over the traces of the dwellings and lamenting.
Weeping over the ruins and lamenting has fallen low.
وَقَدand indeed فازَhas triumphed مَنone who فيin الحَربِwar أَصبَحَhas become جائِلranging about
يُطاعِنُtrades spear-thrusts with قِرناًan opponent وَالغُبارُwhile the dust مُطَنِّبُspreading thickly
And he has triumphed who is now ranging in battle,
While he who charges with his spear in the battle by dawn
Trading spear-thrusts with an opponent while the dust spreads thickly.
Piercing the enemy ranks as the dust whirls has succeeded.
نَديميmy boon companion رَعاكَmay He guard you اللَهُGod قُمrise غَنِّsing ليto me عَلىover

كُؤوسِcups المَناياdeaths مِنof دَمٍblood حينَwhen أَشرَبُI drink
My boon companion, may God guard you—rise, sing to me over
My friend, may God protect you, arise and sing to me
Cups of death filled with blood, as I drink.
As I drink from cups of blood when I imbibe.
وَلاand do not تَسقِنيgive me to drink كَأسَa cup المُدامِwine فَإِنَّهfor indeed it
يَضِلُّgoes astray بِهاthrough it عَقلُreason الشُجاعِthe brave man وَيَذهَبُand vanishes
And do not give me a cup of wine, for indeed
And do not serve me the cup of wine, for by it
The brave man's reason goes astray through it and vanishes.
The mind of the brave is led astray and perishes.
