لَقَدindeed قالَتshe said عُبَيلَةُUbayla إِذwhen رَأَتنيshe saw me
وَمَفرِقُand the parting of لِمَّتيmy long hair مِثلُlike الشَعاعِrays of light
Indeed, Ubayla said when she saw me,
When Ubaylah saw me, with my hair parted like rays,
with the parting of my hair like rays of light:
She exclaimed: “By God, how brave you are,
أَلاAh! لِلَّهِto God دَرُّكَyour excellence مِنwhat a شُجاعٍbrave man
تَذِلَّbow humbly لِهَولِهِbefore his terror أُسدُthe lions of البِقاعِthe lands
“Ah, God bless you—what a brave man,
The lion of the land submits to your awe!”
before whose terror the lions of the lands bow!”
I said to her: “Ask the heroes about me,
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her سَليask الأَبطالَthe champions عَنّيabout me
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle فَرَّfled مُرتاعُone afraid of القِراعِthe clash of arms
So I said to her, “Ask the champions about me
When the clanging of shields makes cowards flee.
when one afraid of the clash of arms flees.
Ask them to tell you my resolve stands firm,
سَليهِمask them يُخبِروكِthey will tell you بِأَنَّthat عَزميmy resolve
أَقامَestablished بِرَبعِin the dwelling of أَعداكِyour enemies النَواعيmourners
Ask them; they will tell you that my resolve
Against the enemies in your land.
has brought mourners to your enemies’ dwelling.
I am the fortunate slave, my luck and effort,
أَناI العَبدُthe slave الَّذيwhose سَعديmy good fortune وَجَدّيand my luck
I am the slave whose good fortune and luck
Tower over misfortune, rising high.
rise above Suha in height.
I ascended to the pinnacle of glory,
سَمَوتُI rose إِلىto عَنانِthe heavens of المَجدِglory حَتّىuntil
عَلَوتُI rose high وَلَمand did not أَجِدfind فيin الجَوِّthe sky ساعيa striver
I rose to the heavens of glory until
So high none could compete, in the sky.
I soared and found no striver in the sky.
Another tried to match my striving,
وَآخَرُand another رامَsought أَنto يَسعىstrive كَسَعيِيlike my striving
وَجَدَّand strove بِجَدِّهِwith his zeal يَبغيseeking اِتِّباعيto follow me
And another sought to strive as I did,
But with all his might, only followed my lead.
and labored with all his zeal, seeking to follow me.
He fell short of reaching my noble goals,
فَقَصَّرَso he fell short عَنof لَحاقيovertaking me فيin المَعاليlofty achievements
وَقَدand indeed أَعيَتgrew weary بِهِbecause of him أَيديthe hands of المَساعيendeavor
So he fell short of overtaking me in lofty achievements,
Exhausting himself, lacking the deed.
and the hands of endeavor were exhausted by him.
A noble steed carries my weapons and gear,
وَيَحمِلُand carries عُدَّتيmy battle gear فَرَسٌa horse كَريمٌnoble
أُقَدِّمُهُI urge it forward إِذاwhen كَثُرَbecame numerous الدَواعيthe calls
And a noble horse carries my battle gear;
Sent forth when duty and valor call.
I urge it forward when the calls multiply.
In my hands, the polished lethal blade,
وَفيand in كَفّيmy hand صَقيلُpolished المَتنِthe blade’s back عَضبٌa keen sword
يُداويcures الرَأسَthe head مِنof أَلَمِthe pain of الصُداعِheadache
And in my hand is a keen sword with a polished back,
That cures the head’s ache and sorrow’s pall.
which cures the head of headache pain.
My lance's point flashes bright as fire,
وَرُمحيand my spear السَمهَرِيِّSamhari (stout-shafted) لَهُit has سِنانٌa spearhead
يَلوحُgleams كَمِثلِjust like نارٍfire فيon يَفاعِhigh ground
And my Samhari spear has a point
Threatening like flames leaping high.
that gleams like fire on high ground.
I do not waver when faced with harshness,
وَماand not مِثليone like me جَزوعٌfainthearted فيamid لَظاهاits blaze
وَلَستُand I am not مُقَصِّراًremiss إِنif جاءَcame داعيa caller
And one like me does not quail amid its blaze,
Nor hesitate when the need is nigh.”
nor am I remiss if a caller comes.”
