Raqash has gone far from you, save for fleeting visits,

and her cord has become a worn-out, rotting remnant.

And what use is remembering Raqash, when she has settled

by the tamarisks, near Shamam's twin peaks?

And her people's dwelling lies in the hollow of a valley bend,

where the summer-breeding doves lay their eggs.

My companions and I halted at Uraynabat,

on the saddle-frames of lean camels, like swifts.

So I said: Look closely at the women's litters I see,

alighting far away at the onset of darkness.

Truly, on the day at Qaww your soul beguiled you

with the fancies of a heart distraught with love.

And your soul has lied to you; give it the lie,

for Qatam fed you hopes deceitfully.

And from a jolting she-camel I drove the horses back,

while she was about to cast away her rein.

So I told her: Curb that haste, and go on,

while the howdah counterweights caught on the ankle-straps.

    And shaggy horses bear champions,

on the morning of terror, like arrows—

long-necked steeds trotting on their hooves,

stirring up dust with swift, terrible death,

    toward marked horses, mounted by

battle's defenders amid swirling clouds of dark dust.

Upon them rides every mighty, unyielding warrior,

whom you see thirsting to drink blood.

In their hands are Indian-steel swords and brown spears,

as though their edges were flames of blazing fire.

So they came as a cold cloud, and we came

as a fire in a thicket full of flame.

And silence every sound but blows,

and fierce grappling, and those shot at and those shooting.

I checked their vanguard with the spear, scattering it,

on a fleet steed like a wolf in the darkness.

    قَلائِدُهُ سَبائِبُ كَالقِرامِ

    I wheel my wounded colt back against them;

his necklaces are flowing tresses, like a patterned curtain.

When his forelegs are transfixed by a piercing thrust,

he stands exposed in a cramped position.

As though the flanks where his elbows swing back

were inherited by one archer after another.

    He advanced, lean-bellied, pressing hard

with his permanent tooth against the bridle's iron bar.

A youth drives him forward; among the noblest of Abs

is his father, and his mother is of Ham's line:

an old woman of the descendants of Ham, son of Noah,

as though her brow were the stone of the Maqam.
