جَلَبناwe brought الخَيلَthe horses مِنfrom جَنبَيboth sides of أَريكٍArīk
إِلىto القَلَعاتِal-Qalaʿāt مِنof أَكنافِthe environs of بَعرِBaʿr
We brought the horses from both sides of Arīk
We brought the horses from the sides of the couch
to al-Qalaʿāt, in the environs of Baʿr:
To the fortresses from the valleys of camel-hair tents
ضَوامِرَlean كِالقِداحِlike arrow shafts تَرىyou see عَلَيهاupon them
يَبيسَdried residue of الماءِwater (here, sweat) مِنof حُوٍّdark-bay horses وَشُقرِand chestnut horses
lean as arrow shafts; upon them you see
Bridles like firebrands you see on them
dried sweat on dark bays and chestnuts.
The water dried from heat and yellowishness
نَؤُمُّwe head toward بِهاwith them بِلادَthe lands of بَنيthe sons of أَبيناour father
عَلىdespite ماwhat كانَthere was مِنof نَسَبٍblood kinship وَصِهرِand kinship by marriage
With them we head for the lands of our father's sons,
With them we alarm the lands of our fathers’ sons
despite whatever ties of blood and marriage there were.
As it was from ancestry and in-laws
تُجاوِبُthey neigh to one another فيin جَوانِبِthe flanks of مُكفَهِرٍّgrim and dark
شَديدٍmighty رِزُّهُits roar كَاللَيلِlike the night مَجرِa vast army
They neigh to one another along the flanks of a grim
They call back and forth on the sides of a dusty darkness
host, mighty in its roar and dark as night.
Whose knitting is like the night woven
صَبَحناهُنَّwe brought them at dawn حَرّابَḤarrāb بنَson of قَيسٍQays
وَجَعدَةَand Jaʿdah مِنof بَنيthe sons of كَعبِKaʿb بنِson of عَمرِوʿAmr
At dawn we brought them against Ḥarrāb son of Qays,
We met them in the morning, Harrab son of Qais
and Jaʿdah of the sons of Kaʿb son of ʿAmr.
And Ju’dah from the sons of Ka’b son of ‘Amr
كَأَنَّas though الخَيلَthe horses أَيمَنَto the right مِنof أَباضٍAbāḍ
بِجَنبِbeside عُوَيرِضٍʿUwayriḍ أَسرابُswarms of دَبرِbees
It is as though the horses, to the right of Abāḍ,
As if the horses were from the right side of Abad
beside ʿUwayriḍ, were swarms of bees.
Next to Uwairid, flocks of ostriches
إِذاwhen سَطَعَrises الغُبارُthe dust خَرَجنَthey emerge مِنهُfrom it
سَواكِنَquiet بَعدَafter إِبساسٍhissing calls to urge horses وَنَقرِand tongue-clicking
When the dust rises, they emerge from it,
When the dust rises, there emerges from it
quiet after hissing calls and tongue-clicks.
Settlements after isolation and departure
مُجَرَّبَةًbattle-tested عَلَيهاupon them كُلُّevery ماضٍman pressing onward

Battle-tested, they bear every man who presses onward
Tested on them is every past
into battle's depths, from Jusham son of Bakr.
To the battles from Jusham son of Bakr
