أَلاhark! ياO مُرَّMurr وَالأَنباءُand the tidings تَنميspread
عَلامَto what تَرىyou think صَنائِعَناour favors تَصيرُwill come
Hark, O Murr, as the tidings spread:
Oh messenger, as news grows rife
What do you think will become of our favors?
What can you see will be our strife?
أَلَمdid not تَشكُرgive thanks لَناto us أَبناءُthe sons of تَيمٍTaym
وَإخوَتُهاand its brethren اللَهَازِمُal-Lahāzim والقُعورُand al-Quʿūr
Did not the sons of Taym thank us,
Do Banu Taim and their friends thank
And its brethren, al-Lahāzim and al-Quʿūr,
Us that we drove the enemy rank?
بِأَنّاbecause we نَحنُwe ourselves أَحمَيناprotected حِماهُمtheir protected pastures
وَأَنكَرناand we resisted وَلَيسَand there was no لَهُمfor them نَكيرُresistance
Because it was we who guarded their protected pastures,
We who defend them night and day
And resisted when they had no power to resist?
When spears and walls won’t make them pay
وَنَحنُand we لَيالِيَduring the nights of الأَفهارِthe stones فيهِمamong them
يُشَدُّare tightened بِهاduring them الأَقِدَّةُthe leather thongs وَالحُصورُand the girths (uncertain sense)
And we, among them during the nights of the stones,
We rid their fear and endless toil
When leather thongs and girths were drawn tight,
Why should our truth their minds foil?
كَشَفناwe removed الخَوفَthe fear وَالسَعَياتِand hostile schemes عَنهُمُfrom them
فَكَيفَso how يَغُرُّهُمdeceives them مِنّاconcerning us الغَرورُthe deceiver
Drove fear and hostile schemes away from them.
Abdullah called them twice again
So how can the deceiver mislead them about us?
To a hard land that they’d not deign,
وَعَبدُاللَهِand ʿAbdullāh ثانِيَةًa second time دَعاهُمcalled them
إِلىto أَرضٍa land يَعيشُlives بِهاin it العَسيرُthe destitute person
And ʿAbdullāh called them a second time
To Syria’s land, its love and shield
To a land where the destitute can live,
Where.......spread and fighting peeled
إِلىto أَرضِthe land of الشَآمِal-Shām (the Levant) حِمىًprotected pasture وَحَبٌّand grain
وَثَمَّand there............. فَشَاabounded العَصِيرُthe pressed juice
To the land of al-Shām, with protected pasture and grain,
And there ... pressed juice abounded.
