God forbid that our women should wail

over one who has perished, or that we should cry out at the killing.

The clashing of swords against swords has settled us

in an open land of arak trees and tamarisks.

So the days have left us no wealth

save a remnant of small camel herds, their offspring diminished.

Three equal shares: the cost of our horses,

our provisions, and what we drive to slaughter.
