أَأَجمَعُ صُحبَتي سَحَرَ اِرتِحالا
وَلَمand did not أَشعُرI perceive بِبَينٍof a parting مِنكِfrom you هالاO Hala
وَلَم أَشعُر بِبَينٍ مِنكِ هالا
Have my companions resolved to depart before dawn,
Shall I gather my companions at dawn’s charm
without my knowing of parting from you, Hala?
Yet feel no separation from you that alarms?
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see مِثلَthe like of هالَةَHala فيamong مَعَدٍّMaʿadd
وَلَم أَرَ مِثلَ هالَةَ في مَعَدٍّ

تُشَبَّهُ حُسنَها إِلّا الهِلالا
And I have seen none like Hala among Maʿadd;
None can equal your beauty’s striking halo—
her beauty is likened only to the crescent moon.
The crescent moon yourself you embalm.

Most pleasing and sweet the tidings I exhume—

That Majid, son of Amr the shield did seize
fought in earnest on the morning of Nataʿ.
And sincere at dawn’s light proved in the bloody gloom?

His battalion is tightly massed and mighty;
His brave squadron attacked most fiercely
when they shoot at it, it turns the arrows aside.
As their arrows found their foe’s targets to consume
