عَوابِسَgrim-faced يَطَّلِعنَthey emerge مِنَfrom النِقابِthe mountain passes
We brought the horses from the two flanks of Arik,
grim-faced, emerging from the mountain passes.
كَأَنَّas though إِناثَهاtheir mares عِقبانُeagles دَجنٍDajn
إِذاwhen طُؤطِئنَthey are made to bend low فيin بَلَدٍa land يَبابِbarren
As though their mares were the eagles of Dajn,
when made to bend low in a barren land.
صَبَحناهُنَّwe brought them at dawn عَنfrom عُرُضٍa flank تَميماًTamim
وَأَتلَفَand destroyed رَكضُناour charge جَمعَthe host of الرِبابِal-Ribab
We brought them upon Tamim at dawn, from the flank,
and our charge destroyed the host of al-Ribab.
فَأَفنَيناso we annihilated جُموعَهُمُtheir hosts بِثَأجٍat Tha'j
وَكَرَّتand they returned بِالغَنائِمِwith the spoils وَالنِهابِand the plunder
So we annihilated their hosts at Tha'j,
and the horses returned with spoils and plunder.
فَكَمso how many عَفَّرنَthey rubbed in the dust مِنof وَجهٍa face كَريمٍnoble
غَداةَon the morning لَقيتُهُمI met them وَالنَقعُand the dust كابِrising
So many a noble face they rubbed in the dust
the morning I met them, while the dust was rising.
