حَلَفتُI swore بِرَبِّby the Lord of الراقِصاتِthe swaying camels عَشِيَّةًat dusk
إِذاwhenever مَخرِمٌa mountain pass خَلَّفتُهُI left it behind لاحَcame into view مَخرِمُa mountain pass
I swore by the Lord of the swaying camels at dusk,
I swore by the Lord of the dancing girls one evening,
whenever I left one mountain pass behind, another came into view,
That if I leave behind a drunkard, I myself will not get drunk,
يَقومُwould rise وَرائيbehind me ناشِدٌan accuser ليagainst me بِغَدرَةٍwith a charge of treachery
طَوالَthroughout اللَياليthe nights أَوunless تَزولُshould vanish يَلَملَمُYalamlam
that no one would rise behind me to accuse me of treachery,
A complainant stands behind me for a betrayal,
throughout all the nights, unless Yalamlam should vanish.
Throughout the nights or it passes he mumbles,
وَلَستُand I am not بِمِفراحٍexcessively joyful لِمالover wealth أُفيدُهُI acquire it
وَلَستُand I am not عَلىover ماwhat فاتَنيhas passed me by أَتَنَدَّمُI feel regret
And I do not exult over wealth I acquire,
I am not overjoyed at wealth I gain,
nor do I regret what has passed me by.
Nor do I regret what I have missed.
