O Amr son of Qays, indeed your eagle went forth at dawn

and returned to the clansmen of Jusham.

O Qays son of Amr—raid upon raid,

and a troop of horses plundering wealth and livestock.

When they reach level ground they trot; on rugged ground they grow hoof-sore.

And you would think them jinn when the squadrons stream forth.

Whenever rain pours down and a tract grows lush,

I pour upon it a mighty host that torments them.

So if I do not make a dawn raid upon your grazing herds,

like the first locust swarm driven by wind and light rains,

then may no woman lay aside her veil for me,

nor may my arrow win when the arrows come together.
