قِفاراًdesolate بُدِّلَتwere changed بَعديafter my departure عُفِيّاeffaced
I visited dwellings of Hind's people,
I visited the dwellings of the tribe of Hind,
desolate, their traces effaced since I left.
Desolate places changed after me.
تُبينُyou discern رَمادَهاtheir ashes وَمَخَطَّand the outline of نُؤيٍa camp trench
وَأَشعَثَand a weathered stake ماثِلاًstanding فيهاin them ثَوِيّاstill lodged
You can discern their ashes and a camp trench's outline,
Their ashes appear and the tracks of tents,
and a weathered stake, upright and still lodged there.
With a blackened cooking pot boiling in them.
فَكادَتso they nearly مِنfrom مَعارِفِهاtheir familiar traces دُموعيmy tears
تَهُمُّflood الشَأنَthe tear-duct ثُمَّthen ذَكَرتُI remembered حَيّاthe living
So, at their familiar traces, my tears almost
My tears from their acquaintances almost
flooded the tear-duct; then I remembered the living.
Cared for the matter, then I remembered one alive.
وَكانَand it would be الجَهلُfolly لَوif أَبكاكَmade you weep رَسمٌa ruined trace
وَلَستُand I am not أُحِبُّI like أَنto أُدعىbe called سَفِيّاa fool
It would be folly if a ruined trace made you weep,
Ignorance would have wept for you as a duty,
and I do not like to be called a fool.
But I do not like to be called foolish.
وَنَدمانٍand a drinking companion كَريمِnoble in الجَدِّancestry سَمحٍgenerous
I served a morning drink بِسُحرَةٍat daybreak كَأساًa cup سَبِيّاimported wine
And a drinking companion, of noble stock and generous,
And a noble, generous, forgiving reproacher
I served at dawn a cup of imported wine.
I have become at dawn a captured cup.
يُحاذِرُhe fears أَنthat تُباكِرَarrive early عاذِلاتٌreproachful women
فَيُنبَأَand so be told أَنَّهُthat he أَضحىbecame غَوِيّاwayward
He feared reproachful women would arrive early,
He is wary that blamers will hasten
and he would be told he had become wayward.
So he is told he has become reckless.
فَقالَthen he said لَناto us أَلاcome now هَلis there مِنany شِواءٍroast meat
بِتَعريضٍby hinting وَلَمand did not يَكميهِconceal it عِيّاthrough inarticulacy
He said to us, 'Come now, is there any roast meat?'
So he said to us, “Is there no roast
by way of a hint, not hiding his wish through inarticulacy.
With allusion?” and he did not conceal the meaning.
فَأَرسَلتُso I sent الغُلامَthe servant وَلَمand did not أُلَبِّثdelay
إِلىto خَيرِthe finest of البَوائِكِthe fat she-camels تَوهَرِيّاa Tawhari
So I sent the servant without delay—
So I sent the boy and I did not tarry
a Tawhari—to the finest of the fat she-camels.
To the best she-camels loaded evenly.
فَناءَتso she heaved herself up لِلقِيامِto stand لِغَيرِwithout سَوقٍbeing driven
وَأُتبِعُهاand I send after her جُرازاًa keen-cutting sword مُشرَفِيّاMushrafi
She heaved herself up to stand, without being driven,
She went to stand without going to market
and I followed her with a keen-cutting Mushrafi sword.
And I made her follow a broad saddle.
فَظَلَّso he spent the day بِنِعمَةٍin comfort يُسعىbeing served عَلَيهِfor him
وَراحَand departed at evening بِهاwith it كَريماًnoble أَجفَلِيّاhospitable to all
He spent the day in comfort, being waited on,
He remained with a blessing sought after
and departed with that bounty, noble and hospitable to all.
And went away generously swaying.
وَكُنتُand I used to إِذاwhenever الهُمومُcares تَضَيَّفَتنيcame to me as guests
قَرَيتُI offered guest-fare to الهَمَّsorrow أَهوَجَheadstrong دَوسَرِيّاa mighty camel
And whenever cares came to me as guests,
When cares visited me
I served sorrow a headstrong, mighty camel:
I would read out the care as intensely dark.

newly full-grown that year, rock-strong and massive,
A she-camel of his, a shield against hot wind,
never complaining of weariness during all-day travel.
Upon being loaded would not complain of exhaustion.
يُشيحُhe presses on عَلىacross الفَلاةِthe open desert فَيَعتَليهاand so surmounts it
وَأَذرَعُand the longest-striding ماof those that صَدَعتَyou split apart بِهِwith him المَطِيّاthe riding camels
He presses across the open desert and surmounts it,
She bolts into the wilderness so he spurs her
the longest-striding mount with which you split the camel-train.
And the miles her feet cracked are binding.
كَأَنيas though I حينَwhen أَزجُرُهُurge him on بِصَوتيwith my voice
زَجَرتُI urged on بِهِwith it مُدِلّاًself-assured أَخدَرِيّاan Akhdari wild ass
As though, when I urge him with my voice,
It is as if when I deter her with my voice
I were urging a proud Akhdari wild ass with it.
I deterred with it one heavily pregnant.
تَمَهَّلَhe went ahead of عانَةًa wild-ass herd قَدalready ذَبَّdrove danger away عَنهاfrom them

He went ahead of a herd he had defended,
She slowed out of weakness, her burden removed
his standing-place far away from them.
So that her destination would be nearby.
أَطالَhe prolonged الشَدَّrunning وَالتَقريبَand cantering حَتّىuntil

ذَكَرتَyou recalled بِهِthrough him مُمَرّاًsinewy أَندَرِيّاan Andari
He prolonged his running and cantering until
He prolonged urging and bringing near until
you recalled, through him, a sinewy Andari,
You mentioned with it one passing by.
بِهاwith them فيin رَوضَةٍa meadow شَهرَيthe two months of رَبيعٍRabiʿ

فَسافَthen he sniffed لَهاof theirs أَديماًa hide أَدلَصِيّاsmooth and gleaming
with them in a meadow for the two months of Rabiʿ;
With it in a garden the two months of spring
then he sniffed a smooth, gleaming hide of theirs.
He travelled over a plain intensely dark.
مُشيحاًwatchful هَلwhether يَرىhe sees شَبَحاًa shape قَريباًnearby
وَيوفيand he ascends دونَهاin front of them العَلَمَthe hill العَلِيّاlofty
watchful for any shape he might see nearby,
Glancing - does he see an apparition drawing near?
and climbing the lofty hill in front of them.
And the high flags would fail besides it.
إِذاwhenever لاقىhe met بِظاهِرَةٍon open high ground دَحيقاًan outcast
أَمَرَّhe made bitter عَلَيهِماfor them both يَوماًa day قَسِيّاcruel
Whenever he met an outcast on the open upland,
When he meets a terrible wasteland
he brought a bitter, cruel day upon them both.
He would pass a very hard day over them.
فَلَمّاthen when قَلَّصَتdwindled عَنهُaway from him البَقاياthe remnants
وَأَعوَزَand grew scarce مِنin مَراتِعِهِhis pastures اللَوِيّاthe withered herbage
Then, when the last remnants dwindled around him,
So when the remnants diminished from him
and withered herbage grew scarce in his pastures,
And the pastures lacked what would restore him,
أَرَنَّhe brayed فَصَكَّهاthen he struck them صَخِبٌnoisy دَءولٌquick-stepping
يَعُبُّhe pours عَلىover مَناكِبِهاtheir shoulders الصَبِيّاamorous ardor
he brayed and struck them, loud and quick-stepping,
There clamored over her a yearling camel, foolishly playing,
pouring amorous ardor over their shoulders.
Bellowing over her shoulders like a child.
فَأَورَدَهاso he brought them to water عَلىbefore طِملٍa ragged man يَمانٍYemeni
يُهِلُّhe cries out إِذاwhen رَأىhe sees لَحماًmeat طَرِيّاfresh
So he brought them to water before a ragged Yemeni
So he brought her to a red-haired male camel
who cries out when he sees fresh meat.
Who drools when he sees delicious meat.
لَهُhe had شِريانَةٌa shiryan-wood bow شَغَلَتoccupied يَدَيهِhis two hands
وَكانَand he was عَلىin تَقَلُّدِهاcarrying it slung قَوِيّاstrong
He had a shiryan-wood bow that occupied both hands,
He has a she-camel that occupied his hands
and was strong enough to carry it slung upon him.
And he was strong in controlling her.
وَزُرقٌand blue arrowheads قَدalready تَنَخَّلَهاhe selected them carefully لِقَضبٍfor shafts

يَشُدُّhe fastens عَلىat مَناصِبِهاtheir mounting-points النَضِيّاthe bare arrow-shaft
And blue arrowheads he had carefully selected for shafts,
And a coat of mail which date palms wove for him
fastening the bare shaft firmly at their mounting-points.
That binds over his positions intensely.
تَرَدّىhe cloaked himself in بُرأَةًa hunting blind لَمّاwhen بَناهاhe built it

تَبَوَّأَhe took مَقعَداًa seat مِنهاinside it خَفِيّاhidden
He cloaked himself in a hunting blind; once he had built it,
She fell back when he built her
he took a hidden seat inside.
And took up from her a hidden seat.
فَلَمّاso when لَمdid not يَرَينَthey see كَثيرَmuch ذُعرٍalarm
وَرَدنَthey came to water صَوادِياًthirsty وَرداًan approach to water كَمِيّاstealthy
When they saw little cause for alarm,
When he did not see much confusion in her
they came thirsty to water in a stealthy approach.
He returned her to pasture satiated.
فَأَرسَلَso he loosed وَالمَقاتِلُwhile the vital spots مُعوِراتٌwere exposed
لِماto what لاقَتthey met ذُعافاًa deadly shaft يَثرِبِيّاYathribi
He loosed—while their vital spots lay exposed
So he sent the fighters while the warriors
to what they faced—a deadly Yathribi shaft.
Encountered the battle cry of Yathrib.
فَخَرَّthen fell النَصلُthe arrowhead مُنقَعِصاًbuckled رَثيماًchipped
وَطارَand flew القِدحُthe arrow-shaft أَشتاتاًin scattered pieces شَظِيّاsplintered
The arrowhead fell, buckled and chipped,
The blade fell, soaked in blood,
and the shaft flew apart in scattered splinters.
And the leather bucket flew into pieces.
وَعَضَّand he bit عَلىon أَنامِلِهِhis fingertips لَهيفاًanguished
وَلاقىand he met يَومَهُhis day أَسَفاًgrief وَغِيّاand failure
He bit his fingertips in anguish,
He bit his fingers in anguish
and found his day full of grief and failure.
And met his day with sorrow and disappearance.
وَراحَand he went home بِحِرَّةٍwith burning anguish لَهِفاًdistraught مُصاباًstricken
يُنَبِّئُtelling عِرسَهُhis wife أَمراًa matter جَلِيّاplain
He went home with burning anguish, distraught and stricken,
He went moaning, stricken,
telling his wife the plain tale.
Announcing his wedding an open matter.
فَلَوso if لُطِمَتshe were slapped هُناكَthere بَذاتِwith one having خَمسٍfive fingers
لَكاناthe two would have been عِندَهاin her eyes حِتنَينِequal counterparts سِيّاalike
Had she been slapped there with a five-fingered hand,
If she were to be hit there with five arrows,
the two would have been matched and equal in her eyes.
The two of them would be snakes to her.
وَكانواand they were واثِقينَconfident إِذاwhen أَتاهُمhe came to them

And they had been confident whenever he came to them
They were confident that if he brought them
with meat, whether in the morning or at evening.
Flesh, whether morning or evening,
