وَأَيقَنَتِand became certain النَفسُthe soul إِلّاapparently 'that there is no' (literally 'except') خُلوداimmortality
I have grown old, and my nearest kin have left me.
I grew old and my loved ones left me
And my soul grew certain that there is no immortality.
And the soul was certain of nothing but eternity
وَبانَand departed الأَحِبَّةُthe loved ones حَتّىuntil فَنواthey perished
وَلَمand did not يَترُكِleave الدَهرُTime مِنهُمamong them عَميداa chief
And my loved ones departed, until they perished.
And friends disappeared until they were gone
And Time left no chief among them.
And time left none of them as pillars
فَياso, O دَهرُTime قَدكَenough from you! فَأَسجِحso be gentle بِناwith us
فَلَسناfor we are not بِصَخرٍrock وَلَسناand we are not حَديداiron
So, O Time, enough! Be gentle with us.
So oh time we bow down before you
For we are not rock, nor are we iron.
For we are neither rock nor iron
