خَليلَيَّmy two friends لاdo not تَستَعجِلاyou two hurry أَنto تَزَوَّداyou two take provisions
وَأَنand to تَجمَعاyou two gather شَمليmy scattered affairs وَتَنتَظِراand you two wait غَداtomorrow
My two friends, do not hasten to take provisions,
and to gather my affairs together and await tomorrow.
فَماfor no لَبَثٌdelay يَوماًever بِسابِقٍforestalling مَغنَمٍa gain
وَلاnor سُرعَتيmy haste يَوماًever بِسابِقَةِoutstripping الرَدىdeath
For no delay will ever forestall a gain,
nor will my haste ever outrun death.
وَإِنand if تُنظِرانيyou two grant me respite اليَومَtoday أَقضِI will fulfill لُبانَةًa desire
وَتَستَوجِباand you two will earn مَنّاًa debt of gratitude عَلَيَّupon me وَتُحمَداand be praised
And if you two grant me respite today, I shall fulfill a desire,
and you will earn my gratitude and win praise.
لَعَمرُكَby your life ماno نَفسٌsoul بِجِدٍtruly رَشيدَةٍwise

By your life, no truly wise soul
would secretly counsel me to break with Marthad,
وَإِنand even if ظَهَرَتappeared مِنهُfrom him قَوارِصُstinging remarks جَمَّةٌnumerous
وَأَفرَعَand descended فيin لَوميblaming me مِراراًrepeatedly وَأَصعَداand ascended
even though many stinging words have come from him,
and he has ranged low and high in blaming me, time and again,
عَلىfor غَيرِno ذَنبٍoffense أَنthat أَكونَI might have جَنَيتُهُcommitted it
سِوىexcept قَولِthe words of باغٍa malicious man كادَنيplotted against me فَتَجَهَّداthen strove hard
for no offense that I had committed,
save the words of a malicious man who plotted against me and strove hard.
لَعَمريby my life لَنِعمَexcellent indeed is المَرءُthe man تَدعوyou invoke بِحَبلِهِthrough his bond
إِذاwhen ماever المُناديthe herald فيin المَقامَةِthe assembly نَدَّداcried aloud
By my life, a fine man indeed, whose bond of protection you invoke,
when the herald cries aloud in the assembly.
عَظيمُabundant رَمادِashes of القِدرِthe cooking-pot لاnot مُتَعَبِّسٌscowling
وَلاnor مُؤيِسٌmaking others despair مِنهاof it إِذاwhen هُوَhe أَوقَداkindled a fire
His cooking-pot's ashes are heaped high; he never scowls,
nor makes anyone despair of it when he kindles the fire.
وَإِنand even if صَرَّحَتrevealed herself كَحلٌKahl, the famine-year وَهَبَّتand blew عَرِيَّةٌa freezing blast
مِنَof الريحِthe wind لَمdid not تَترُكleave لِذيfor one possessing المالِwealth مِرفَداa large serving-bowl
And even when Kahl, the famine-year, revealed herself, and there blew a bitter blast
of wind that left the wealthy no bowlful to offer,
صَبَرتُI was patient عَلىunder وَطءِthe trampling of المَواليkinsmen وَحَطمِهِمand their crushing pressure
إِذاwhen ضَنَّwas stingy ذوone with القُربىclose kinship عَلَيهِمtoward them وَأَخمَداand extinguished his fire
I bore the trampling of kinsmen and their crushing pressure,
when a close relative begrudged them aid and put out his fire.
وَلمand did not يَحمِdefend فَرجَthe exposed flank of الحَيِّthe tribe إِلّاexcept مُحافِظٌa guardian of honor

And none defends the tribe's exposed flank but a guardian of honor,
noble of countenance, magnanimous, never miserly.
