أَفقِدI lose بِهِwith it إِذwhen فَقَدتُهُI lost it أَمَماa trifle
Ah, my soul's grief for youth! And I did not
lose a mere trifle with it when I lost it.
قَدindeed كُنتُI was فيin مَيعَةٍyouthful prime أُسَرُّI am delighted بِهاby it
أَمنَعُI ward off ضَيميwrong done to me وَأُهبِطand I bring down العُصُماthe white-footed ibex
Once I was in youth's prime, delighting in it,
warding off humiliation and bringing down white-footed ibex.
وَأَسحَبُand I trail الرَيطَthe fine wraps وَالبُرودَand the striped cloaks إِلىtoward

And I trailed fine wraps and striped cloaks toward
the nearest of my merchants, tossing my locks.

أَمسىhas become فَلانٌso-and-so لِعُمرِهِover his lifespan حَكَماan arbiter
Do not envy a man because it is said of him:
“So-and-so has become the arbiter of his own lifespan.”
إِنif سَرَّهُhas pleased him طولُthe length of عَيشِهِhis life فَلَقَدthen surely
أَضحىhas become apparent عَلىupon الوَجهِthe face طولُthe length of ماthe time that سَلِماhe remained safe
If his long life has pleased him, then surely
his long survival now shows upon his face.
إِنَّindeed مِنَamong القَومِthe people مَنone who يُعاشُone is sustained بِهِby him
وَمِنهُمُand among them مَنone who تَرىyou see بِهِin him دَسَماa stain
Indeed, among the people are those through whom one lives,
and among them are those in whom you see a stain.
