Was it from Layla, after a spell of stillness, that there came by night

a phantom that stirred remembrance in my heart?

It reminds me of youth and Umm ʿArw,

and the dark traces of spring camps, and the dwellings,

and a clan of the sons of Ṣaʿb ibn Saʿd—

may successive showers and abundant, steady rains water them!

Hear this: tell Saʿd, the people's commander,

for his oath has proved false, and he has acted unjustly.

And he gnashed his fang, unjustly and ignorantly,

against me; he has brought upon himself blame and disgrace.

May you be bereaved! You have indeed forgotten ʿAmr's sword-fighting,

while you, like a limping beast, enter the den.

I battle the foes with sidelong spear-thrusts in your defense,

and I face white swords and thirsty spears,

at the gate of al-Qadisiyyah, ready to fight to the death,

like a lion of Uraykah that refuses to flee.

I drive my colt in a charge against them, and defend,

when they shirk duty and the defense of kin and honor.

May God repay you for your treatment of me with ingratitude,

and after death, with zaqqum and fire!
