تَمَنَّت مازنٌ جهلاً خِلاطي

تَمَنَّت مازنٌ جهلاً خِلاطي

فذاقت مازنٌ طَعمَ الخِلاطِ

فذاقت مازنٌ طَعمَ الخِلاطِ

Māzin, in ignorance, wished to clash with me;

Mazin wished for ignorance blindly

so Māzin tasted the savor of combat.

So Mazin tasted the flavor of blindness

أَطَلتُ فِراطَكم عاماً فعاماً

أَطَلتُ فِراطَكم عاماً فعاماً

وَدَينُ المَذحِجِيّ إِلى فِراطِ

وَدَينُ المَذحِجِيّ إِلى فِراطِ

I prolonged your respite year after year,

I prolonged your excess year after year

and the Madhḥijite’s debt was deferred.

While the debt of Mudhiji kept growing

أَطَلتُ فِراطَكم حَتّى إِذا ما

أَطَلتُ فِراطَكم حَتّى إِذا ما

قَتلتُ سَرَاتَكم كانت قَطَاطِ

قَتلتُ سَرَاتَكم كانت قَطَاطِ

I prolonged your respite until the time when

I prolonged your excess until when

I killed your chiefs, and that was enough.

I killed your horses, they were in fragments

غَدرتم غَدرةً وَغَدرتُ أُخرى

غَدرتم غَدرةً وَغَدرتُ أُخرى

فما إِن بيننا أبداً يَعَاطِ

فما إِن بيننا أبداً يَعَاطِ

You committed one betrayal, and I another;

You betrayed once and I betrayed another

so never is a cry of “Beware!” heard between us.

So there is no more dealing between us

بطعنٍ كالحريق إذا التقينا

بطعنٍ كالحريق إذا التقينا

وضربِ المَشرَفيَّة في الغُطَاطِ

وضربِ المَشرَفيَّة في الغُطَاطِ

With spear-thrusts like fire whenever we meet,

With a stab like fire when we meet

and strokes of Mashrafi swords in the murk,

And hitting Al-Mushrefiya in the darkness

وذلك يَقتُلُ الفِتيانَ شَفعاً

وذلك يَقتُلُ الفِتيانَ شَفعاً

ويَسلُبُ حُلَّةَ اللَّيثِ العَطَاطِ

ويَسلُبُ حُلَّةَ اللَّيثِ العَطَاطِ

and that kills young men in pairs,

That kills the young men in pairs

and strips the massive lion of his mantle.

And strips the garment of the fierce lion
