أمِن رَيحانةَ الداعي السميعُ
يُؤرِّقنيkeeps me awake وأصحابيand my companions هُجوعُasleep
يُؤرِّقني وأصحابي هُجوعُ
Is it the loud-voiced caller from Rayhana
From the fragrance of the caller, the All-Hearing,
who keeps me awake while my companions sleep?
I and my companions are kept awake and restless,
بَرَانيhas worn me thin حُبُّlove مَنone whom لاnot أستطيعُI can attain
بَرَاني حُبُّ مَن لا أستطيعُ
ومَنand one who هوhe للذيfor that which أهوىI desire مَنوعُever withholding
ومَن هو للذي أهوى مَنوعُ
I have been worn thin by love of one I cannot reach,
I am barred from loving those I cannot attain,
and of one who withholds what I desire.
And from whom my longing is forbidden.
لمdid not تستطيعyou are able شيئاًanything فَدَعهُso leave it
لم تستطيع شيئاً فَدَعهُ
وجاوِزهُand pass beyond it إلىto ماwhat تستطيعُyou can do
وجاوِزهُ إلى ما تستطيعُ
You could not do something—so leave it,
If you cannot accomplish a thing, then leave it,
and pass beyond it to what you can do.
And move on to what you can accomplish.

أَمِن رَيحانَةَ الداعي السميعُ
يُؤرّقنيkeeps me awake وأصحابيand my companions هُجوعُasleep
يُؤرّقني وأصحابي هُجوعُ

سَباهاtook her captive الصِمّةُal-Simma الجُشَميُّal-Jushami غصباًby force
سَباها الصِمّةُ الجُشَميُّ غصباً
كأنَّas though بياضَthe whiteness غُرَّتِهاher brow صديعُdaybreak
كأنَّ بياضَ غُرَّتِها صديعُ
Al-Simma al-Jushami took her captive by force,
Al-Samit Al-Jushami has taken her by force,
as though the whiteness of her brow were daybreak.
As if the whiteness of her cheek was lightning.
وحالتand stood as a barrier دونهاbefore her فرسانُthe horsemen قيسٍof Qays
وحالت دونها فرسانُ قيسٍ
تَكَشَّفُdraw back عنfrom سواعدهاtheir forearms الدروعُthe coats of mail
تَكَشَّفُ عن سواعدها الدروعُ
And the horsemen of Qays barred the way to her,
And the knights of Qais stand between us,
their coats of mail drawing back from their forearms.
Their armor revealed on their forearms.
إذاif لمnot تستطعyou can do شيئاًanything فدَعهُso leave it
إذا لم تستطع شيئاً فدَعهُ
وجاوِزهُand pass beyond it إلىto ماwhat تستطيعُyou can do
وجاوِزهُ إلى ما تستطيعُ
If you cannot do something, leave it,
If you cannot accomplish a thing, then leave it,
and pass beyond it to what you can do.
And move on to what you can accomplish.
