Lo, the sons of Aʿlā acted treacherously long ago,

And Anʿum—they are drippings from waterskins.

And whoever drinks al-ʿAbl’s water proves treacherous,

Despite whatever fever afflicted those coming to drink.

And you were slaves, children suckled by pregnant mothers,

Sons of slave women well practiced in mating.

You would surely have made yourself heard, had you called someone living,

But there is no life in the one you call.

And had you breathed upon a fire, it would have shone,

But you are blowing into ashes.
