O Abbas, have you seen a horseman like me,
When war’s fuel blazes with champions,

وقد قُلِبَت تحتَ السُروج لُبودُها
Or the like of Zubayd when the spears interlock,
With their felt pads overturned beneath the saddles?

Zubayd came to you with spears, as though they were
The pits of dry dates; Amr leads them to battle.

The sun’s horn had scarcely risen before they were bound fast—
Sulaym ibn Mansur, their iron upon them.
