أَلمdid you not? تأرَقlie awake لذاat this البرقِthe lightning اليَمانيYemeni
يَلوحُit flashes كأنّهas though it were مصباحُa lamp بانِa builder
Did you not lie awake at this Yemeni lightning?
Has not this Yemeni lightning struck you,
It flashes like a builder's lamp,
Flashing as if it were a shining lamp?
كأنَّas though مآتماًgatherings of mourners بانتappeared عليهupon it
إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle اهتاجstirred أودٌAwd فيin جُسَانِJusan
as though gatherings of mourners appeared upon it,
As if it were mourning rites displayed for it
when Awd stirred in Jusan.
Whenever a fire raged in volcanic stones.
فروَّىso it drenched ضارِجاًDarij فَذَواتِthen Dhawat خَيمٍKhaym
فَحَزَّةَthen Hazzah فالمدافعَthen the watercourses منfrom قَنَانِQanan
So it drenched Darij, then Dhawat Khaym,
It crept away, warming the insides of tents,
then Hazzah, then the watercourses from Qanan.
Then the sides of hilltops and cannons.
لقدcertainly علمَknew الحُماةُthe defenders الشُمُّthe proud أَنيthat I
أَهَشُّI rejoice إِذاwhen دُعِيتُI am summoned إِلىto الطِّعانِspear-fighting
The proud defenders know well that I
The protectors knew that I
rejoice when summoned to spear-fighting.
Am most valiant when summoned to thrust.
وَقِرنٍand many a rival قدindeed تَرَكتُI left لدىat مَكَرٍّa charging-ground
عليهupon him سَبائبٌribbons of blood كالأُرجُوانِlike crimson cloth
And many a rival I have left at a charging-ground,
And a spear I left in the hands of a cunning man
with ribbons of blood upon him like crimson cloth.
Upon it Sabaean locks like purple dye.
دَعانيhe called me دَعوةًa call والخيلُwhile the horses تَرديgalloped
فلاso not أَدريI know أَباسميby my name? أَمor كَنَانيhe addressed me by my kunya
He called out to me as the horses galloped,
He called me while horses stampeded,
so I know not whether he used my name or my kunya.
I know not if he called me by my name or nickname.
يُلَجلِجُhe stammers over كُنيتيmy kunya ويُريغُand seeks إسميmy name
فُلاناًSo-and-so مرةًat one time وأَباand Father of فُلانِSo-and-so
He stammers over my kunya and gropes for my name,
Murmuring my nickname and drawling my name,
now 'So-and-so,' now 'Father of So-and-so.'
So-and-so one time, and son of so-and-so another.
فكانso it was إِجابتيmy answer إِيّاهُto him أَنّيthat I
عَطَفتُI wheeled عليهagainst him خَوَّارَresponsive العِنانِthe rein
So my answer to him was that I
My reply to him was that
wheeled against him a steed responsive to the rein.
I pulled on the compliant bridle.
فماso not أَوهىweakened مِراسُthe trials of الحربِwar رُكنيmy strength
ولكنbut rather ماwhat تقادَمَhas passed مِنof زَمانيmy lifetime
It was not war's trials that weakened my strength,
The pillar of war did not weaken me,
but the years of my life gone by.
But the passing of my time has.
وإِنand if لاnot يُذهِبِtakes away الحَدَثانُtime's vicissitudes نفسيmy life
أَزُركُمI shall visit you ياO بنيsons of عَبدِAbd المَدَانِal-Madan
And if time's vicissitudes do not take my life,
Though youthfulness does not take my soul,
I shall visit you, O sons of Abd al-Madan,
I will support you, O sons of Ma'dan.
بفتيانٍwith young warriors إِذاwhen فَزِعُواthey are alarmed تَرَدَّواthey cloak themselves

with young warriors who, when alarmed, cloak themselves
With young men who, when terrified, recoil
in every keen Yemeni blade of Indian steel.
With every angry and impetuous Yemeni.
