Longing for Rayhana stirred anguish in you,

when she parted from you and her home grew distant.

I kept holding back my riding-camel on the day of parting,

until they moved on and she shed her tears in streams.

Until he climbed the rugged uplands, driving her on,

like an oryx; the wind brushed him, and he swayed.

And beautiful women slay men when

they dye their robes and veils with saffron—

each a gracious maiden, never nurtured by want,

nor raising her voice in clamor over anything.

Indeed, beautiful women have undone me, though I see

their cords as weak-stranded and false.
