صَبَرتI endured patiently علىover اللذَّاتِpleasures لمّاwhen تَوَلَّتِthey turned away
وألزمتُand I compelled نفسيmy soul الصبرَpatience حتىuntil استمرَّتِit grew steadfast
I bore the loss of pleasures patiently when they turned away,
And I bound my soul to patience until it grew steadfast.
وكانتand was علىthrough الأيامthe days نفسيmy soul عزيزةًproud
فلماbut when رأتit saw صبريmy patience علىunder الذُلِّhumiliation ذَلِّتِit became abased
And my soul had been proud through the days,
But when it saw my patience under humiliation, it became abased.
فقلتُso I said لهاto it ياO نفسsoul عِيشيlive كريمةًwith dignity
لقدindeed كانتِwas الدنياthe world لناours ثُمَّthen وَلَّتِit turned away
So I said to it: O soul, live with dignity;
Indeed, the world was ours, then it turned away.
وماand not النفسُthe soul إلاexcept حيثُwhere يجعلهاhe places it الفتىa man
فإنfor if أُطمعتit is given hope تاقتit yearns وإلاand if not تَسَلَّتِit finds consolation
And the soul is only where a man places it:
For if given hope, it yearns; otherwise, it finds consolation.
فكمfor many an غَمرةٍordeal دافعتُهاI fended it off بعدafter غَمرةِordeal
تَجَرَّعتُهاI swallowed it down بالصبرِwith patience حتىuntil تَوَلَّتِit passed
For many an ordeal I have fended off, one after another,
I swallowed it down with patience until it passed.
