عليكyou must take on أباO father of ثورٍThawr سُلَيكَSulayk المَقَانِبِthe cavalry bands
عليك أبا ثورٍ سُلَيكَ المَقَانِبِ
And I journeyed on until someone among the company said:
And he walked until someone among the people said,
“Take on, Abu Thawr, Sulayk of the cavalry bands!”
Upon you, O Abu Thawr, the misfortunes descend
فَرُعتُso I was startled بهby him كالليثlike a lion يَلحَظhe casts glances قائماًstanding
فَرُعتُ به كالليث يَلحَظ قائماً
إذاwhenever رِيعَwas alarmed منهof him جانبٌone flank بعدَafter جانبِanother flank
إذا رِيعَ منه جانبٌ بعدَ جانبِ
So I was startled by him: like a lion, he stood casting glances,
So I pounced on him like a lion watching while standing
whenever one flank of his, then another, was alarmed.
When prey after prey passes by his side

He has a head whose bulk helmets cannot swallow,
He has a mother hamah that does not eat eggs
and the limbs of a man of ʿĀd, with long finger joints.
And the ghosts of 'Adi, long of limbs
